What are you reading this week? And what did you think of last week’s books? Please share! We’d love to know.
Let’s see… I finished The God of the Woods by Liz Moore. It was my second time through the novel, and I enjoyed it even more than the first read. Even though I remembered basically “whodunnit” I didn’t recall a lot of the details. I think it says a lot for a mystery that it bore up under a reread.
I also finished The Invention of Charlotte Brontë by Graham Watson. It was surprising; not only did it talk about the author’s later years but went on to discuss the challenges Elizabeth Gaskell faced when writing her biography after Brontë’s early demise. I’m still not sure I’m a biography reader, but definitely found it worth my time.
I’m now reading Bad Bad Girl by Gish Jen for review. Loving it, and I think this group would really enjoy it as well.
In audiobook format, I finished up The Dutch House by Ann Patchett narrated by Tom Hanks. It was absolutely excellent, and I thank the person here who recommended it. I’m about halfway through The Water Dancer by Ta-Nehisi Coates now and it’s really good, too.
I’m reading “The Book of Lost Hours.” Some time travel, some time manipulation. Very twisty mystery.
Having previously read and enjoyed The Sweetness of Water by Nathan Harris, I have just begun listening to his latest, Amity: “. . . delves into the critical years of the Civil War’s aftermath to deliver an intimate and epic tale of what freedom means in a society still determined to return its Black citizens to bondage”. *

I’m currently reading Mrs. Spy (Robotham), with The Lies They Told (Wiseman) & Bill Kurtis’ memoir Whirlwind waiting in the wings.
Started reading The Irish Goodbye yesterday. It is excellent. Next to read will be The Killing Stones. It will be a great weekend!!!
I just finished Lula Dean’s Little Library of Banned Books, very appropriate for Banned Books Week, right? I’m starting The Cookbook Collector tonight.
I just started The Correspondent by Virginia Evans. Lots of buzz about this one and think I will very much enjoy it! Also in the last quarter of Middlemarch for a buddy read, which made a new friend for me. Yay!
I finished The Invention of Charlotte’ Brontë and agree with Kim’s assessment of the book.
I also read the The Lost Story of Eva Fuentes. It was a captivating story of a book that involved three different women in three generations.
I am currently in the middle of Mona’s Eye’s by Thomas Schlesser. It is a heartwarming story and a convincing tribute to the appeal of famous art work. I am excited about reading the rest of the book.
I am currently reading The Haunting of Payne’s Hollow. I got it as my Book of the Month selection, and it’s a light, spooky October read based on the Headless Horseman story. Next up is The Correspondent. Last week I read Piranesi and The Letter Carrier.
Circular Motion by Alex Foster and I Am You by Victoria Redel. Very different books, each pretty good in its own way.
I’m reading The Lincoln Road for the 2nd time for our book club. Love the characters in this one.
I’m just about to finish The Forgetting by Hannah Beckerman. The story is told through two characters: Anna and Stella. Anna chapters are in first person and Stella’s in second person which I thought an interesting choice. A bit past the halfway point a lightbulb went off, and I think I see what’s coming but may be wrong. As the author gets closer to bringing them together, the pages turn faster.
Over the past week I also took a stab at How to Dodge a Cannonball by Dennard Dayle. It’s a satire placed during the Civil War and lived through the experiences of Anders who ends up on both sides at one time and another and tricks his way into a Black Union regiment even though he looks white. For me the story line sounds funnier than it is, but Mr. Dayle’ is not short on imagination.
I’m in the middle of reading The Listeners by Maggie Siefvater. All my library had was a large print copy which I find distracting, but it does make me feel like I’m reading faster. On the audio side I’m listening to All the President’s Men by Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward. It’s both fascinating and disturbing, especially given today’s political climate.
I am reading Ordinary Grace and listening to Wild, Dark Shore.
I finished listening to Rebecca by Daphne duMaurier for a book club and loved it, didn’t remember much from years ago. I’m almost finished with The Briar Club by Kate Quinn and love it. I’m reading a paperback from the library The Secret History of Audrey James by Heather Marshall. And I’m reading Little Alleluias by Mary Oliver when I have a few minutes.
