What are you reading this week? (8/7/2025)

I loved it, but opinions are varied. I hope you enjoy it!

Misbehaving at the Crossroads by Honoree Fanone Jeffers. Looking forward to hearing her discuss it at the Library of Congress book festival next month!

I will start reading it on Monday. Glad to hear you like it.

I am starting the Stephen King series, which will introduce Holly Gibney, thus Mr.Mercedes is my
first book.

As a native Ohioan (born in Mansfield), I’ll have to check out Buckeye by Patrick Ryan! I love your other choices, too, Kim!

I just finished it last night. It’s very much a portrait of small-town life in Ohio from the 1940s through the 1980s. Definitely a character-driven novel - there’s not much real action - but the pages flew by because I wanted to see where these characters’ lives would lead. It’ll be interesting to see what others think of it. As an Ohioan so much of it felt familiar that it’s hard for me to separate my love of the book from the sense of nostalgia it generated. Of course, it’s not specific to Ohio; any small town during that time period would likely feel similar.

Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi

I read that when it first came out. Loved it. It’s the book that made me a Kingsolver fan.

Beowulf and an Anthology of Old English Poems as translated by Craig Williamson.

Intermezzo by Sally Rooney - not far into it but already totally absorbed

I’m a fan of Kingsolver, too. Kim - she would be an interesting author to interview.

Oh, for sure. She’s one of my favorite authors. Whenever we talk about really well-known writers I think, “Oh, no way they’ll want to talk to us!” Most of the time I’m right – but then there was Chris Bohjalian, who was very accommodating. I’ll have to see if I can dig up a publicity contact for her. I’d love to have her here.

The Shepherd’s Life by James Rebanks (Non-Fiction)
Strangers In Time by David Baldacci
Return To Sender by Craig Johnson (finished - not my favourite by this author)

One of my all time favourite books! One of six books I have kept and not given away.

I am reading Midnight On The Potomac by Scott Ellsworth.

I am reading My Friends by Fredrik Beckman. It is delightful. I loved A Man Called Ove, but I think My Friends is better.

I’m listening to Coming Up Short: A Memoir of My America by Robert Reich and reading The Sideways Life of Denny Voss by Holly Kennedy. Two VERY different books, and so far Reich’s book is taking up more of my time. The history is interesting!

I’m finally reading Kate Quinn’s The Briar Club. It’s really good…no surprise!

I just started All the Colors of the Dark by Chris Whitaker today for my book club meeting in a couple of weeks. Usually I put off reading the book until 5-7 days before the meeting so I retain it better, but started this one as soon as my library hold came in since there’s a waiting list. Have 20 minutes left on Candide by Voltaire (on James Mustich’s list of 1000 Books to Read Before You Die). Thinking about listening to A Place of Greater Safety by Hilary Mantel, but it’s over 33 hours long!

I just finished re-reading “The Bell Jar” and now I’m reading “Moby Dick.”
