The Blind Assassin, by Margaret Atwood. Very complicated, but interesting
Just finished There are Rivers in the Sky. Wow. Now reading The Last Assignment
Finishing “The man no one believed” by Joshua Sharpe and also reading “Something so wicked” by Doreen McMillan. Then starting “Forget me not” by Stacy Willingham.
I’m 92% through Big Bad Wool by Leonie Swann, the follow-up to Three Bags Full. My stomach is a bit clenched reading it! It’s a little stressful, worrying about characters. I’m equally anxious and eager to get back to it.
I read the first one waaaay back in 2007, and gave it a high rating, so I was thrilled to see this new one in English (finally – it appears it took them about 16 years to get it translated and published here).
I am reading “The Missing Thread: A New History of the Ancient World Through the Women Who Shaped It.” As a Latin teacher, I find it a fantastic way to present known information. Next in the stack is the Pulitzer Biography winner, “Every Living Thing: The Great and Deadly Race to Know All Life.”
And of course, a large area of the USA used to be Mexico
I just finished The Women of Arlington Hall by Jane Henley in the night. Went from not sure to liking this book. Think I’ll start The Mango Tree by Annabelle Tometich next. These are both ebooks. I’m reading book One Good Thing by Georgia Hunter. I like it, but just harder for me to read actual books. And about to finish The Martha’s Vineyard Beach and Book Club by Martha Hall Kelly on audio. Another good week of reading.
I am about halfway through “Mercy” by Joan Silber. (Preparing for the discussion, with thanks to BookBrowse for a copy.) I’m enjoying wondering where she is going to take these strands around one pivotal experience. There’s something about it that reminds me of “Half a Life: a memoir” by Darin Strauss, one of those books I’d consider reading again a decade later.
I just finished listening to “The Real Lolita: the Kidnapping of Sally Horner and the Novel that Scandalized the World” by Sarah Weinman. Reading it in preparation for the “Lolita” book discussion.
This week’s audiobook is “Isola” by Allegra Goodman. A book that hadn’t caught my attention until it was mentioned in a community forum here.
After reading The Lies They Told I read another book written by Ellen Marie Wiseman. — What She Left Behind. Another tragic story of parents falsely admitting their daughter in 1929 to a state mental hospital because they disapproved of the man the daughter loved. The book emphasizes the horrifying conditions patients experience. Now I am in the middle of Mrs. Endicott’s Splendid Adventure so far it is charming. On Tuesday I plan to begin Mercy.
Endling by Maria Reva. Snails and marriage tours in Ukraine?! Not sure it’s for me but the setting, recommendations from readers and its inclusion on the Booker list convinced my to give it a try. I’ll see…
I’ve also thought about reading Ruth so will be curious to know what you think and if I should move it to the top of my TBR.
I finished Benjamin Myers’ The Perfect Golden Circle last week. Did you ever get to it? I don’t want to say too much in case you haven’t read it yet.
I was one of the many that endorsed The Offing. I also read The Perfect Golden Circles. I did enjoy the book but for me it definitely did not leave me with the emotional feelings as The Offing.
Haven’t read Golden Circle yet, should I move it up in the TBR stack? (almost done with Ruth)
How is it the last day of August? And how did I let the day go without finishing my latest read?!?
Trying to finish The Favorites by Lanye Fargo and the arc/alc of All This Could Be Yours.
Yes if you have the time. I am interested on your perception of the book. Like The Offing the main characters are completely different from each other and in a different time period from The Offing. I thought it was entertaining but……..
Keep it on your TBR! I agree with Lynne - The Offing touched me more because I was closer to the two main characters and it is the book I’ll recommend to other readers. But given that, reading Perfect Golden Circles has made me even more of a Benjamin Myers fan. The elements it has in common with The Offing - two main characters I came to care about, beautiful writing, descriptions of the natural world - all are there. I wonder if I would like his historical fiction (Cuddy or Gallows Pole) as much? I may have to track them down.
I loved it gave it 5 stars.
I’m reading The Magician by Colm Tobin. The world pre Nazi take over in Europe eerily familiar to current affairs. A very introspective, informative thread on propaganda and how to respond.
That was a good one! If you like it, read The Woman in Suite 11 - same characters - fun story.
Finishing The Island of Sea Women - set on Jeju Island, Korea. Fascinating story and I am really enjoying it. Just finished The Wedding People which did not appeal to me so this is a refreshing improvement!
