What book or books are you reading this week! Please share! We’d love to know.
I’m reading Babylonia for the BookBrowse book club, but I’m feeling a bit behind the curve this week. I’m doing better with my audio books - I just started Book 7 of the Slough House series, with one more to go after this one. I’m definitely enjoying it to the point that I’m compelled to finish the series but I’m looking forward to a change of pace.
I’ve been reading about the Cherokee’s removal from their lands in western Carolina and Georgia. I read Nancy Stanfield Webb’s A Woman of Marked Character, an historical fiction account of Sarah Ridge Paschal, the daughter of Major Ridge who decided to leave his lands after Pres Andrew Jackson refused to abide by SCOTUS decision that the land in question belonged to the Native Americans. Outnumbered by both white settlers and the military, Sarah’s father led the first group to Indian Territory. The strength and role of this women was, per usual, undocumented but as an educated female, she nevertheless played a huge role.
I’m reading now Rebecca Nagle’s By the Fire We Carried, a descendant of Major Ridge who writes of an account for the generations-long Native Americans’ fight for justice on their lands. Again, the actions of our white male politicians are shameful.
I found Rebecca Nagle’s book fascinating. I’m not a lawyer but the legal conduct was really interesting.
I’m reading The Bee Sting by Paul Murray. It’s quite long so I’m trying to do both audio and paper. It’s not the easiest book to sync that way but I manage to find my place again after I’ve been walking.
I just finished Time of the Child - loved it! And now starting Case Histories by Kate Atkinson and assorted light holiday reads.
Time of the Child is my next book! Need something uplifting!
Hope you enjoy the Time of the Child. I appreciated that was thoughtful and heartfelt and that it wasn’t a jolly HoHoHo or a Mistletoe Lip-locker holiday read (nothing wrong with those - just nice to have options).
I loved ‘Time of the Child’ so much, I’m now reading Niall Williams first, ‘Four Letters of Love.’ It’s so good! A film version is due out early 2025.
I’m still waiting to get “TIme of the Child” from the library–can’t wait! I just started “After Oz” by Gordon McAlpine. I’m in Kansas, felt like I have to.
Still trying to finish These Is My Words by Nancy E. Turner and listening to Johnny Tremain by Esther Hoskins Forbes which is on James Mustich’s list, 1000 Books to Read Before You Die.
I’m reading The Rose Code by Quinn. The author names Prince Phillip as a man dating one of the main characters prior to his wedding to Elizabeth. Hmm
I am reading Demon Copperhead.
I’m reading Creation Lake by Kushner. When I am finished reading a book
I usually pass it in to a friend or I
donate it to our local library or to hospice. (I volunteer at hospice)
That was one of my favorites last year, @Cheryl_Winter. I’d love to hear what you think of it once you’ve finished.
I picked up the paperback copy of The Bee Sting and am hoping to carve out time this Winter to read it. Looking forward to hearing more of your thoughts on it.
I finished two books this week for January book club discussions: Ina Garten’s memoir, Be Ready When the Luck Happens and Colm Toibin’s Long Island. A friend lent me a copy of Kate Quinn’s The Briar Club, so I should start that next.
hi @Diane_Jones, I’m feeling like The Bee Sting is not my favorite kind of book–family dysfunction. What I can say is that I am absolutely loving the audio and the narrator will get full credit for my positive response. There is a section in the middle of the book that is a character’s backstory and for some reason it is written without punctuation. If I had been reading it there would have only been words on the page. But the narrator is bringing it to life with her lovely Irish accent and the perfect emphasis in exactly the right places. I can have the book open on my lap at the same time and can see what she is doing but if I had be reading it I think it would have fallen completely flat. I don’t know how you feel about audio but I strongly recommend it if you want another dimension.
@Diane_Jones did you read Brooklyn before Long Island? What did you think?
I read The Briar Club not that long ago and really liked it. I hope you enjoy it!
The Way by Cary Groner
I’m only 12% in and I am so so hooked!!
