What are you reading this week (1/2/2025)?

What My Bones Know: A Memoir of Healing From Complex Trauma by Stephanie Foo. She’s a very talented writer.

Reading an oldie but goodie, The Prince of Tides, by Pat Conroy. The man writes prose like poetry. Savoring each sentence.

@Carol_Ann_Robb @Paula_Walters I’ve reached out to the publisher as I think there’s a very good chance the books are still in transit.

@kim.kovacs I’m reading Playground now, only a few dozen pages in but so far so good!

Thanks Nick!
Kim, reading an oldie this week, Nora, Nora by Anne Rivers Siddons. I am slowly rereading older books and then giving them to my library for our book sale.

I’m about halfway through Raised by a Serial Killer by April Balascio and am amazed by the details included about her childhood. I was a little skeptical about whether she could recall enough relevant information about the author’s preteen years to would provide insight into her father’s behavior. The detailed insight into childhood events is sad, but is helpful in understanding how she eventually connects the dots to unsolved cold cases.

I had a nice cup of coffee and started “Model Home” this morning. It starts slowly but I have high hopes.

I’m very curious about Model Home. Please come back with some thoughts if you have a chance.

Reading Baking Cakes in Kigali by Gaile Parkin. It was published years ago. The main character reminds me a bit of Precious Ramotswe, the main protagonist in Alexander McCall Smith’s No. 1 Lady Detective Agency. Stumbled on to the book as I was looking for ideas toward my “Read the Globe” goal.

Oooh, @Regina_Garay, that one sounds good! I love space & robot books. This one’s going on The List!

I’m proud of you, @Anne_Glasgow! Life’s too short to stay with books you’re not enjoying.

I have a friend from Poland who moved here in his 20s (he’s now in his 50s and his English is perfect). He was trying to read English Language classics. “I am not enjoying Pride and Prejudice at all!” he once moaned to me. “Martin, you’re an adult. If you don’t like a book, just don’t finish it!” He looked like that had never occurred to him, LOL.

BROKEN COUNTRY by Claire Leslie Hall

It is a very well-written, dual timeline that will pull at your heart strings.

Loving the characters.

Highly recommending it even though it was a slow start - it includes a love triangle, a murder, a trial, and a lot of heartbreak, but oh so good.

@Regina_Garay I picked up All Systems Red out of curiosity after seeing your comment. What a fun book! I am going to read more of the series, too! Another fun series of short books with a robot is Becky Chamber’s “Monk and Robot” series…this series is kind of a “cozy sci-fi” series. It isn’t dark or dystopian.
