What are some of the most pressing injustices that continue to affect women and girls today? What do you think we can do to change them?
I wish I could name the countries in Africa where genital mutilation of young girls was a ritual. I’m not even sure if that is still happening. It is/was a terrible injustice affecting young girls in recent history. It’s all about subjugation of the powerless (young girls) by the powerful (men).
All I know is to lobby, to join or contribute to a group or church that may have a voice..
Suppression of women has gone on for centuries and continues to this day including in our country. We can’t even get an equal rights amendment passed and surely won’t now with this current unenlightened administration.
Where to begin- genital mutilation, arranged marriages, denial of education. While those things may not take place in 1st world countries, there is still much to be done to give women parity. My concern is that women seem to have lost ground in the past few years.
I am concerned about the dark clouds on the horizon regarding women’s freedoms. For specific reasons labeled DEI women’s history is being erased or removed from shelves, museums, etc. And who will suffer the most if HeadStart is eliminated? Who will need to quit their jobs to stay with their children?
When I visited China in 1993 it was still illegal to have more than one child unless the parent was a man and had divorced or left his fist wife. He could father more children after receiving government approval. Also, orphanages were filled with far more girls than boys. The preference of sons as discussed in the book rang true to what I learned.
I am concerned for all women and girls in the U.S. of all ages.
All the previous posts are spot on. The USA is going backwards driven by The Heritage Foundation, Project 2025 and the misogynists that run it and follow them. Organized religion which almost exclusively uses the patriarchal system to control women and children and to amass power plays a foundational role. Currently the SAVE Act is a serious threat to the voting rights of women. If you don’t know what it is in a nutshell it is a crafty way to stop women from voting. It will make it extremely difficult if not impossible for women to reregister to vote and to initially register to vote. They are systematically stripping us of our rights and then making it impossible for us to vote them out. This country elected a convicted adjudicated rapist, one who was caught on tape bragging about grabbing women between the legs. What was the response ? To elect him to the most powerful office in the world and to snicker or cheer him on or to make excuses for his behavior. We are no better than the countries who mutilate their girls, who refuse them drivers licenses , or allow them to be seen outside unescorted by male relatives and it about time the women and MEN of this country woke up and gave a damn about it . What can we do? Get out and STAND UP and MAKE NOISE. Stop voting for these people who do not truly believe in equal rights and humanity but only in subjugating women and minorities and weaker people. Get the FIVE CALLS app and make the calls. Join a protest or start your own. I was at a statehouse yesterday for MAYDAY then left and attended a grassroots protest we have along a busy intersection in a small town nearby. Tuesday I will be at the major intersection near my home STANDING UP. What else can we do? Talk to your neighbors and family and friends and meet new friends to band together at protests . Join the Card Campaign for Democracy if you prefer to stay at home and work more behind the scenes . TEACH your boys and the men in your life better. Demand they discuss equality with you and don’t give up. Discuss why they blame women for their job losses their troubles, their poor grades ,etc Explain to them that when women are FORCED to give birth against their will and better judgement THEY, the men have also lost their rights. Explain that a women tied down with children cannot work that second family job that pays for so much they depend on. The cost of child care is exorbitant. Ask these young men if they want to pay child support at 18? And lose their college opportunities? Do these grown men want to start another family at 60? Do they want their wife to give birth and have a very high risk of maternal mortality AND fetal abnormality? Leaving this man with a lifetime of childcare? SPELL IT OUT for them. Demand your reps/senators support the ERA. We are going backward and if every single one of us DOES NOT GET OFF THEIR SEAT AND MAKE A LOT IF NOISE and CALL! CALL! CALL! Their elected officials we will lose our votes and our voices and our daughters will die and soon our access to pur own money and property. WAKE UP! SPREAD THE ALARM!
Amen, Roberta_Winchester!!
Could not have said this better Gerrie_B. It is a dark and scary time we live in at present.
Women in America should celebrate their freedoms. The ERA is not necessary because the 14th Amendment should protect our rights. Consider that even 45 years ago, women could not get a credit card much less a mortgage with a male family member co-signer.
Whatever one thinks of the current political climate, one must reflect on the strides women have made since 1970. I was the first woman casualty claims professional hired by a British insurance company on Indiana in 1980. In 2025, my current employer has numerous women in senior leadership from diverse backgrounds and experiences- including C- Suite.
There remain challenges for women in certain sectors, including forced child marriage, genital, mutilation, poverty, lack of access to clean water and vaccinations, not to mention the subservience, denigration, subjugation, and practice of honor killing in many South American, African, and Muslim countries.
At the present time, our political environment seems to be dishonoring females and their accomplishments by removing them from history. It seems the only way to change this tragic perspective is to go to the polls and vote for people who do honor women and what they do.
So well said! Could not have said it any better! Let’s go! Get involved! Get loud!
Injustice, especially against women and girls, is rooted in cultural, political, and historical systems. We see how Hai, Di, and their mother are devalued because they are female. This inequality still exists today.
The most pressing injustices women and girls continue to face include:
Gender-based violence includes domestic abuse, sexual assault, and human trafficking.
Limited access to education, where girls are still denied the right to go to school.
Economic inequality, where women are paid less for the same work, are denied opportunities, or are expected to take unpaid caregiving roles.
Restricted reproductive rights, where women are not always able to make choices about their bodies, health care, or family planning.
Cultural discrimination, from a lack of representation in leadership roles to harmful traditions like female infanticide or dowry systems.
To overcome these injustices, we need to:
Support girls’ education globally, ensuring that they have equal opportunities.
Advocate for laws and policies that protect women’s rights and hold perpetrators of violence accountable.
Support equal pay, parental leave, and women-owned businesses.
Challenge norms and stereotypes through media, literature, and open conversation.
Listen to women’s voices, especially marginalized ones, and make space for them in decision-making.
