I did not sympathize with her. I thought it was low to ambush him on their anniversary. I think things like that should be done in private. I could sympathize her because she thought he was a cheater. But no one deserves public humilation

I agree! No one deserves public humiliation. She made it worse by not understanding his (appropriate) reaction, and instead focused on the food.

Well she thought he was unfaithful but it was very wrong planning to let him know on their anniversary especially since this was suppose to be such an exciting outing at this expensive restaurant. Why did she not earlier confront him?

Renee_P, So well stated. I squirmed at the public humiliation and then she wants to go ahead and enjoy the meal? I do know of a couple that broke up on an anniversary, but it was done in private.

I thought asking for a divorce on their anniversary in a restaurant wasn’t the time or place to do it. There should have been a discussion in a more private place. Jane should have said she was feeling like everyone took her for granted when she started feeling that way instead of letting the anger build up.

I have to be honest, I did not care for Jane. She annoyed me at every turn. She thinks things about her husband, and plans to blind side him. She’s way over involved in her daughter’s life. I feel like she was upset about what her life was “supposed to be to be”, instead of trying to reevaluate, or trying to do something to achieve what she wanted.

I agree with everyone. Jane should have done this in private not at an expensive restaurant.

I’m in agreement with everyone here that it was low of Jane to ask for a divorce at their anniversary dinner-and an expensive one at that. Why waste all that money for a divorce dinner?

I thought it was a bit cold to spring this on him on their anniversary. Especially at this high end restaurant. But, as the story developed, I got over it

What a heartless thing to do. She could have waited until the anniversary day was over. She was in her own world. That’s not to deny that their marriage was lacking in some areas. She was rather self-centered.

Yes, I was surprised, she chose an evening at a very expensive restaurant to make this announcement. Too bad they couldn’t have had dialogue throughout the 19 yrs.. Maybe they couldn’t have learned to understand each other and help each other through life’s journey.

I wasn’t surprised but I just didn’t understand why she chose to do it a. during their anniversary, b. at a VERY expensive restaurant that is a once-in-a-lifetime kind of experience, and c. in such a public place knowing the conversation would become emotional no matter how Dan took it.

I was not surprised at the time because it was so early in the book. I did not and do not sympathize with her because as the book went on it seemed to be she was just looking for any excuse to leave. I found her to be very unlikable.
