I was familiar with the expression of being Shanghaied. I would be interested in visiting the tunnels. I wonder how many Chinese are still sent away for forced labor.

I was unaware of anyone being shangied or of tunnels.

I knew the expression “to be shanghaied.” The existence of the tunnels was the most interesting thing to me.

I did not k ow anything about the tunnels before reading this book. A fascinating bit of history that should come to light.
I was familiar with the term Shanghaid, but not the original meaning. And crimped was another thing I had t read about.

Yes, I was familiar with the historical stories about these tunnels. Ruthless!

I had never heard of the tunnels. Quite interesting to read about. I would have preferred to have less twists & turns in the plot and more focus on the historical part of the story.

I had heard the term “shanghaied" and understood it to mean that someone was kidnapped or abducted. But I never knew that it actually meant being imprisoned and forced to perform hard labor as a deckhand. I did not realize that the practice ended when steamships came into use and had no knowledge of either the tunnels under Portland, the city’s history with Chinese immigrants, or the massacres.
