We don’t find out until partway through the book why each character is grieving. What were your theories at first? Were you correct in your guesses as to what had happened to each of them?
I really did not have any theories about why each of them were grieving. I was just enjoying reading the book and then surprised by why some of them were grieving. Often I think it is nice to just read a book and not always trying to second guess the author.
I didn’t have any theories.
I thought Callum was responsible for some sort of impaired driving accident, although I didn’t imagine it would be someone close to him.
I suspected Frey was grieving a child, particularly as she spoke more about her husband’s distance.
Wasn’t sure about Victoria or Mischa.
I thought Callum had accidentally killed somebody- the story alluded to it early on. Freya’s story spoke of a door that she wouldn’t open, so I assumed the death of a child. There was mention of Mischa’s mother so I assumed her mother passed. Victoria was a complete unknown.
My thoughts about what each was grieving mirror yours, Elise. When each was asked to describe themselves “before” and then how they felt they had changed “after,” made a lot more sense to me when we find out mid-way through the book why they are really there.
I suspected why each was grieving, and my suspicions were confirmed for the most part. Callum was a little harder to figure out as to “who” he was grieving.
Some were correct - I think Callum was the easiest you knew it had to do with drugs and him causing of loss of a life. Mischa was dealing with her mother. But Victoria was harder to figure out. It also made her a very interesting character.
I suspected that Freya had lost a baby, and that Mischa was grieving her mother’s death. I did not have any expectations for Victoria’s grief. I also thought that Callum was responsible for someone’s death but not who, how or why.
