[Warning: Spoilers] What did you think of the author’s view of the afterlife? How does it match or differ from your own?
I believe in God, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. Jesus died for my sins and one day I will be in heaven.
I thought that after the author had each of the characters tell their stories, perhaps she was at a loss for what what to do next, and thought: I know! I’ll kill them all off and invent an afterlife! This was a real eye roller for me. I did not find the afterlife believable or interesting.
It was certainly a vision of the afterlife I’d never heard of before. Reminded me of Dante.
I didn’t care for the afterlife part; however, I could relate to the different levels of an afterlife and reincarnation. The idea of being stuck on earth for eternity struck me as nothing a creator or even a “ loving universe” would condemn a soul to. It also troubled me that “wicked” souls were destroyed.
I never really thought of the afterlife until I saw a movie on Netflix where a woman has to decide if she wants to spend her afterlife with her first or second husband (it was a good movie).
Well the idea of having a therapy session when your stuck between worlds seemed a little over the top for me. I will be thinking of how I feel about this book for some time!
I found the author’s view of the afterlife interesting, though it felt a little too science-fiction–like for me. As someone who considers myself a spiritualist, I’m open to many interpretations of what the afterlife might be, but this particular vision didn’t completely resonate with me
I am with you Paula! When I got to the part in the book where we find out what’s really going on with these 4 people, I was not quite prepared for the author’s take on what happens after death. I decided to continue reading on and to think of this as a fantasy and not something I believe in myself. I also do not believe in reincarnation.
I feel I am the most like Victoria. She was a “take charge” character who also wanted to help the others. Having been in a caretaking role for many years, that’s the only way I dealt with daily needs.
I enjoyed the author’s view and portrayal of the afterlife, even though I’m not sure how I view “afterlife.” I found it interesting and optimistic even if not entirely realistic. Who really knows if there is an afterlife and what it’s all about, if there is. I really enjoyed the ride in any event!
There were a few things that didn’t sit right with me, where essentially the afterlife did not seem so different from Christian ideals. E.g. the idea that some have souls that are too “broken” to be “saved,” so when they die, they just cease to exist. Or that there are several tiers of afterlife and one is positioned based on their (un)ethical behavior. I felt all this was uncalled for given that the book makes no reference to religion until this is revealed, and it made me trust the author less when these religious ideals began to shine through.
I am not sure how I pictured “afterlife” The author’s view was interesting and food for thought. Who really knows? What is it all about? Perhaps we will need to experience it to really find out???
I certainly agree. The author’s version did not sit well with me. Oh, and is Genievive and her “Company “ also enjoying the afterlife version the author has created?
I thought it worked for the purposes of the story. I haven’t got any set view on what happens after we die, though I hope it might be like becoming part of everything in the universe.
I agree with you Paula. As a Christian, I don’t believe in the author’s view of the afterlife. I did view it like fantasy/ nonfiction in this book. It was an interesting take on it. My husband died 3.5 years ago. So, it was interesting to see the viewpoint of Fredya when she went through the portal and could watch her husband and daughter. Especially thinking about how it would affect her when he moves on and finds new love in the future. I believe that my husband is in heaven and not trying to come back but it is interesting to think about. It was also interesting that like my husband, they all died fairly suddenly, young and unexpected. So, it reminds me that we have to always live like today could be our last day. It’s such a shock when you don’t see death coming.
I am always interested in hearing different ideas, interpretations and speculations about the afterlife so found the story intriguing and hopeful.
