War and Peace Side Read, Week 10, August 3 - August 9: Catch up week?

The schedule has us taking a catch-up week from August 3 through August 9. How is everyone doing?

I was out of town much of last week so I’m a little behind but not excessively so.

I continue at my 10 page per day pace which has me only about 3 days ahead at this point. I will keep going which means everyone will catch up to me in a couple of weeks. I just like starting my day with a few pages and this makes it a very comfortable commitment.

I am caught up as of yesterday.

@kim.kovacs and @Anne_Glasgow Have either of you read The Brothers Karamazov? I am trying to figure out if this one is worth adding to my clunker read list.

I have, @Gabi_J. I’ve never really been able to get into any of Dostoyevsky’s works. They’re a lot deeper than Tolstoy’s with less action and more philosophy. I seem to remember a lot of talk about faith vs. atheism in this one. If you want to tackle it, I’ll go down that road with you, but it wouldn’t be my first choice.

Thanks! Will pass for now.

Yes, @Gabi_J in a burst of ambition I read The Brothers Karamazov and then The Brothers K by Duncan. I think they are much more philosophical and I know nothing of philosophy so I don’t think I took much away from either reading.

And after writing this I read @kim.kovacs response to see she said virtually the same thing.

Thanks, Anne! There are others I will tackle first.

I seem to have a difficult time locating the schedule. Can you re-post it please? I think I’m a bit ahead.

Hi @Karen_B1 - Yeah, it’s a little hard to find; it’s buried in the “Who’s In?” thread (comment #39). This link should take you right to it.

I started this book awhile ago and then got caught up in other reads. I do plan on getting back to it soon. Dostoyevsky is very different from Tolstoy. He’s a very wordy writer but that is not necessarily bad. Yes, there is the argument about the existence of god but so is there in W&P. I feel it is worth the effort to read.

Oh, I wasn’t saying it’s not worth the read, for sure. I completely agree. It’s just that it’s not the same kind of narrative experience as reading Tolstoy, and I think Tolstoy is much more approachable.

I didn’t mean to give the impression I was disagreeing with you. Only wouldn’t want others to miss out on the literary journey:blush:.

Oops, please ignore the post below. It was a case of name confusion which was bound to happen with this cast of characters. I have no clue about the passing of time.

I know we’re on catch up week but I’m keeping my slooooow pace. In this morning’s read I was very surprised to learn that 15 years have passed in book time. I haven’t had much of any sense of time passing not even much about seasons changing which should be dramatic in Russia. Have I simply missed it?

I think you’re right that there’s not a lot of info on the passage of time. A Russian audience, particularly back then, might have been more in tune with Tolstoy’s timeframe for the book, since the events would be a part of their recent history.

The Maude translation (at least, the one with the blue cover) has the years it covers as part of the chapter headings, which I find helpful.

Oh, the years in chapter headings would be helpful. As you probably already know the Briggs translation doesn’t have such dates. Just goes to show there are pluses and minuses to each of the translations. Thanks, @kim.kovacs.

Behind, as usual. Catch up week would be appreciated.

Just a heads up: We have a really long section ahead so now is a good time to catch up if it is important to stay on the schedule. By my book the section for two weeks from now is 150 pgs which is about half again more than most of the sections.

I’m ahead, but not sure by how much. Where in the story does the next section end?

Petya going to see the Tsar.
Is that enough of a clue? I am wary of spoilers.
It’s the section after this that is the long one: the beginning of Vol 2 Part 3.

To be clear, @Lana_Maskus, this is the catch-up week.
