To what audience would you recommend Jane and Dan at the End of the World? Is there another book or author you feel addresses related themes or who writes in a similar style?
I would probably limit the audience to adults who like books about couples that finally come together. Fans of comedy might like it too.
I think people who enjoy humorous relationship books would like this
I’d recommend to people who have been married for a long time or couples who are facing empty nests. Also to people who enjoy a humorous book about marriage
I would recommend this book to readers who want an enjoyable, fun read but who also like thought provoking books. I thought the author did a great job of raising issues of family, marriage, morality, mortality with a lighthearted flair.
I would recommend to those who like breezy, easy-to-read fiction with a sharp, clever voice. You would have to be accepting of the whimsical or slightly absurd premise rather than a plot grounded in realism. The author introduces serious subjects like midlife identity and the up and downs of a long marriage but in a light, almost humorous way. If you enjoy the blend of humor and emotional insight, I feel Wedding People by Alison Espach might be a match.
Dee_Dee_K, I really enjoyed Wedding People, great comparison. Tough subjects in a humorous style. There must be an element of disbelief to enjoy.
I recently recommended this to several people in my local Book Club. It would make a great discussion among our group. I feel we can relate to Jane on so many levels…parenting, marriage, frustration at career development, etc.
Agree! This was such a lighthearted and enjoyable read. Very relatable characters.
Good question! In spite of it being about terrorists it does take into consideration the lives of Jane and Dan that led up to the expensive meal. I would consider it light reading and would appear to someone who doesn’t want to over think the plot.
I finished the book several weeks ago, but in the business of life I almost missed the discussion. I loved this book! I would recommend it to anyone who has ever been married to, and loved, a “man“. Any woman who communicates differently than her husband will appreciate Dan. As I read the book I felt like Jane was a believable, but fictional, character while Dan was just a clueless husband who just wandered in off the street.
I would recommend it to friends looking for something fun to read. I liked that it had serious subjects included. But the reality of those subjects was dealt with in a light manner, so the book did not hit me in a hard and depressing way. It was a different type of book for me to choose, so not thinking of any similar ones I’ve read.
Yes, I think the humorous approach makes the reading easier, but at the same time there are quite a few moments where the reader gets an opportunity to stop and think about the situation/circumstance. I would recommend to adults who like this approach and who are willing to take the humor coupled with some insightful moments.
