Think about your favorite genre. To you, which author is the master of that genre?
My favorite genre is by FAR historical fiction. Guess I enjoy history, but appreciate it being spiced up!
There are many, MANY authors who I think excel here. I’m thinking especially of Stephanie Dray. I was very impressed with Becoming Madam Secretary.
I think the people I’d consider “masters” of the genre, though, are those who can bring to life ancient times - eras where records are harder to come by. Ancient Rome is a favorite draw, so I’m going to say Robert Graves (I, Claudius) and Colleen McCullough. Have you read any of her Rome series? It’s like reading Game of Thrones. Very detailed, very complex, very shocking - and based on actual events.
My favorite genre is Literary Fiction, and the master for me is Louise Erdrich.
My second favorite genre is Climate Fiction, for which Kim Stanley Robinson is master, but Charlotte McConaghy (Wild Dark Shore, Migrations) blends the two genres well.
Good historical fiction is so rewarding because it illuminates a period we may not have lived through and connects humans to each other over time. It’s the real time travel.
My favorite fiction genre is by far historical fiction. There are so many great authors writing historical fiction, but I’d have to say my all-time number one is Larry McMurtry. Nothing will ever top Lonesome Dove as my favorite book of all time. Willa Cather’s writing is beautiful. I enjoy literary fiction, too, and F. Scott Fitzgerald and Louise Erdrich are go to’s.
Nonfiction-wise I go for history with Doris Kearns Goodwin, Erik Larsen, and Stephen Ambrose never failing me.
