The mystery is set in Rhinelander, Wisconsin, which did, in fact, give birth to the hodad legend. Did it surprise you that this was a real place, and that its connection to the hodag is depicted accurately?

I’m not sure what prompted me to look up the hodag in the first place, but I was shocked that there was such a thing, and that Rhinelander is a real place. The author did a great job of incorporating the history of the creature and the town into the book.

Yes it does surprise me and as I mentioned in another post I plan to google and discover more about this town and the Hodag. I have relatives in Wisconsin, my nephew and his family. I need to ask them if they have heard of this.

Im from Wisconsin, know Rhinelander well therefore not surprised at all. Thought it was kind of fun for the locals to get this kind of press.

I live just south of Wisconsin. I had not heard of the Hodag, It sounds like an excuse to have a girl’s weekend in Rhinelander. It’s not a long drive. It will be fun

The setting and legends weren’t a surprise. Hodags there and big Paul Bunyans in Minnesota!!!

I had never heard of the hodag before so I was surprised that the legend is real and that the book didn’t add more drama to the legend itself.

No, it did not surprise me that this is a real place and there is an annual festival celebrating the Hodag.

The USA has always been creative in imagining ways to extract money from the general public. There are relics of Dinosaur Land, Santa Claus, Indiana, and this ilk that continue to entertain folks.

It did surprise me to know this is a real place and the hodag was considered its mascot. Couldn’t they have found something else … something else that would be more positive. It is interesting to note where I live “The Frozen Dead Guy” is a focus of a festival that brings in dollars to that small community. At least, this frozen guy didn’t kill people.
