The boys who beat Hugh are newly enlisted "good" Americans, and the men who torture Gerhard are Nazis. How are their actions and underlying motivations the same and how are they different?

It’s a sad parallel of people who have serious prejudices against particular groups—Gay men, or those who disagree with them on almost anything. We’re in that same scary frame of mind in this country right now.

Unfortunately, will still have prejudice and hatred in our country. Biases are hard to rout out of your preconceived notions. My town had no black people and as a high school student; we were bused to a town that had room. For me, it was a great experience and I enjoyed making new friends. It takes an adjustment to let yourself overcome the tenets that you grow up with to expand your world.

This was tough to read. I thought having two separate incidents of violence made the message stronger, and to realize that there are bad deeds caused by prejudice in all groups. As Donna mentioned it important to keep growing and expanding our world.

It is sad but true then and now certain groups of people face prejudice not just in words but also not allowed to join in a group of mutual interest and yes, sometimes they face violence, Even when I was growing up Blacks felt socially isolated and even I was working on a class project with a Black student I invited her to my home were my parents would welcome her but she preferred to work together at school.
