The book opens at Burton Makepeace, a grand estate fallen on hard times, during a murder mystery weekend. What did you think of the setting? Have you ever attended a murder mystery dinner or weekend, or would you like to?
i would love to attend a murder party. I think it would be fun especially if I could wear a costume. I am at an age where I never get to do this without smirks from the grandkids.
I loved the setting. I am fascinated by old home. My favorite trip was to the Biltmore. It is the closest i have ever been to seeing a great home
I really liked the Christie-esque opening. My husband and I did attend a mystery dinner set in an old home in one of Chicago’s suburbs. It was interesting since the actors joined us at dinner and kept in character throughout, but it was still difficult to discern the villain. I found that the mystery was featured, the food not-so-much.
We’ve done Murder Mysteries with some good friends but we usually drink so much, no one can figure out who the murder is (even if it is them!)
Years ago, my husband and I attended a murder mystery dinner with a group of friends, set in the 1920’s at a speakeasy. My character was a flapper and my husband was a golfer so it was fun to dress up in costume to get into character. It was a great evening with food, music and us all acting out our parts. Would be really fun to do this again.
I would love to do something like that, particularly a period piece - something like an Agatha Christie-themed murder mystery dinner. Unfortunately I know my husband wouldn’t be a fan. I’m sure my version would be a lot like @Jessica_M’s though, LOL.
Hahaha! One of our friends got some sort of a kit to plan the party and if I remember correctly, we all got character sheets with ideas for dress and info about the character we would portray. I don’t remember if we had to read prompts for the discussions while it was going on or how it actually worked. Such a long time ago!
Since I’m spending much time watching The Gilded Age, the setting played right into that theme. Absolutely fascinating. That you could own art worth millions, and still live as a pauper in order to save an estate. I’ve never been part of a murder mystery weekend. If this story is an example, hope it would be as much fun…
I’ve never been to a murder mystery party, but they sound like fun. I loved this setting! I grew up reading Nancy Drew and graduated to Agatha Christie in my teens, so I’ve always loved mystery novels set in the U.K.
I love old grand estates and think it was the perfect setting for a murder mystery play. I did actually participate in a Murder Mystery event. I drew the murderer roll and it was quite awkward for me.
The estate intrigued me. I do think it was a perfect setting for a murder mystery weekend. I have never attended one, but have thought about it - not sure I would be comfortable doing so.
I attended a murder mystery dinner with two girlfriends and it was really a good time…we all enjoyed ourselves. But to attend a murder mystery weekend in an old home would be wonderful!
