Stella is by far the youngest resident at The Colony. Her age alone, as well as her young appearance, are big factors in why the other residents ignore her or fail to open up to her. I have to imagine many of the other women could probably intuit why she’s there, and it’s taboo enough to keep them from opening up to her, perhaps even to protect her from having to speak about her abuse.
Stella was one of the few who was actually pleased to be at the Colony because she was away from her abusive home life. She was not only the youngest resident there but also wanted so much to please Mrs. Baker, which was a very different attitude from most everyone else.
I agree that her younger age and her wanting to please Mrs. Baker were probably key reasons others did not like Stella.
I think that the age difference was part of the issue. And then when she was currying favor from Baker simply because Baker was giving her some attention that wasn’t available from her mother.
Maren_C, Wow, I never thought that others would immediately realize the abuse Stella suffered due to her age. You are 100% correct, it is a taboo to discuss and even today, some blame the victim that they were the cause of the incest. Great point!
Stella is naive and won’t look at the reality of the situation she is in. She just knows it is better than home. I think the others were just frustrated with her not being able to understand the reality she and all the others were in.
Stella appears to be very happy to be at the colony and wants to do everything expected of her. She memorize all the rules and follows through on directions and expectations. It is easy to understand why the others would find her to be a pleaser and ostracize her.
