Some of the book’s characters struggle with depression. What did you think of this storyline? Do you feel it was realistic?
Spot on. Depression looks different for each person. It can be utterly debilitating and it can be functional without disruption. I thought the author did a nice job with the characters and with her treatment of depression.
I agree that the author treated depression well, allowing us to see how her characters dealt with it.
Depression, ADHD. This author has some useful information. She treats both with sympathy and kindness.
The author handled depression well - along with those loving and living with those who are depressed. It was very real.
I agree with Emily. I found the depictions of depression to be very believable.
I agree with the group. I felt the author depicted depression realistically and with compassion. It can look different for each individual , and people handle it differently as well. I did not feel she overplayed depression as much as ADHD in the story. I too, taught for many years and have experience with both ADHD and depression as an educator.
I agree. Depression is a very real thing. It can make you physically sick. The author did and excellent job portraying it.
I think the subject was handled very well in this story. The author showed that we may all experience depression at different times in our lives but also demonstrated that positive outcomes can happen. For example, Grace’s depression was brought on by the sudden death of her beloved husband. Getting involved with his book club she found new meaning in her life. Her depression lifted and she started a whole new chapter in her life with new friends and a possible new romance.
I agree with the other comments. The portrayal of Annie’s husband Jack was really accurate. I’ve had major depressive disorder for years. If it’s situational as with Jack, it’s easier to escape than when it’s chronic. I will say that there is too little understanding of the disorder; it often doesn’t leave when situations change.
I thought the topic of depression was an important part of the book. The author demonstrated that many people may have depression at some point in their life. It can arise for various reasons including death of a spouse, loss of a job, or end of a marriage. I think the author’s weaving depression into this story made it stronger.
The author’s dealing with the subject of depression was accurate.
A lot of people struggle with depression daily. I thought the topic was handled well.
