Sisterhood is a theme in the book even though most of the women characters do not have sisters. Can the experience be duplicated in a friendship or as an in-law through marriage? Have you had a similar experience in your own life?

Yes I think it can. I know I am extremely close to one of my friends and I’d call her before a few of my sisters. It’s the sharing and caring that matters.

Yes, a friend or in-law can duplicate a sister relationship. I have a ex-sister-in-law who I still consider her my sister although my brother and her divorced years ago.

I did not have a sister and unfortunately I am not close to my sister-in-law. I am blessed to have a high school friend that I am able to confide in with my challenges, however she lives in Boston. She has a different lifestyle and has her own issues so we don’t talk as often as before. To have a true adult woman friendship is a rare privilege. Unfortunately I am too honest about my faults especially with family members, however the few adult female friends in my community give me the impression they have the perfect relationship with their husband and adult children. Nobody has a perfect life.

I was glad to see Catherine finally embrace her sister-in-law as a sister at the end. Any woman friend can be a sister depending on the relationship you have, sharing confidence, trust, advice and weaknesses. I have had very close female friends who have felt like sisters for me.

I am lucky to have two sisters and several women friends. I dont think you have to be related to be soul sisters! Love, lotalty and trust can be pretty poweful.

Never had a sister, but in my late 30’s developed a frienship with an acquaintance. Through the years she became my very best friend, and I can’t imagine being any closer to another person if thatperson had been a blood sister.

Agree

I absolutely think so. Blood does not inherently mean connection, and found family can be even more powerful. The sister relationships Cath developed over the course of the novel were beautiful to see, especially given her marriage and situation with Patrick.
