Ryan Forrester thinks that clean-air acts and regulations were “most likely the death blow to the country’s ailing manufacturing industry.” (p. 42). What’s your opinion on environmental regulations in the US, particularly now that many policies are being rolled back? Do you think the US went overboard, or not far enough when it instituted such regulations in the first place? What influences your opinion on the matter?

I think the rollbacks are terrible. Let’s bring back smog and water contaminants, kill some people and destroy our planet because some people only live for the here and now - I live for my children and grandchildren’s future. These rollbacks are all for the greedy 1% and companies who are inhumane. Yes, the previous laws were hard but they were they to give us a better future.

Right on Janine! Greed is the real death blow to manufacturing. This seems to be the clear message of the book. Greed is the root of all bad things

The regulations for air and water allowed our country to somewhat recover from the effects of acid rain and water pollution. Taking away clean air and water safeguards is very short sighted.

A hard question to answer. We need clean air, people need jobs. Perhaps it was the regulations that became the “death blow”, however, sooner or later things have to change, that’s the nature of life. I would like to see the US return to clean air regulations and make jobs for people in that arena.

Mother Earth needs to be kept healthy if humanity is to continue. Those who disagree tend to be short-term thinkers willing to risk “whatever” for their own personal greed.

I agree with Karen_B1. I realize we needed to clean up the air, but could it have been done in a way people didn’t lose their jobs? Living in northern Ohio I saw towns and cities become a ghost town with empty town squares and big buildings just sitting empty and broken.

I think they should have implemented these regulations far sooner than they did! We need to have fore thought for future generations if we want to sustain our planet. And I agree with Aprile, greed is the real death blow.
