Rufus is caught between his mother’s expectations and his true self. How does he balance being dutiful with finding fulfillment? Ultimately, what do you think the basis is for his authentic identity: Ancestry? Affluence? Ability? How does Rufus compare to Gopal Das (a.k.a. Whitney Payne Cabot V) in creating an identity? Do you think being American is an advantage for Gopal Das?
Basically, I think Rufus draws the line and establishes he won’t be his mother’s puppet. He will go his own way and pursue his artistic talent and that of others. He is finished being dutiful. This authentic identity was allowed to blossom due to both his affluence and his ability. Rufus fought for what he believed while Gopal Das basically became someone else. At least Gopal Das being an American without titles, etc, probably made it easier on him. He could better reinvent himself.
At times I found myself a bit frustrated with Rufus in his relationship with his mother, but then I realized he was raised by this woman and loved her. For the most part he was trying to be the respectful, dutiful son, yet longed to be the free artist. It’s sad in a way the only reason he will be able to stand up to his mother and be free is through Eden’s inheritance.
