I found this cozy mystery’s humor and characters enjoyable.
As I agreed to participate with Book Browse’s online discussion of Fergus Craig’s “I’m Not the Only Murderer in My Retirement Home,” I questioned what I had gotten myself into, this book was not one I would usually put on my TBR. However, a few pages in and I was hooked on this wickedly clever blended story of dark humor and cozy crime. Craig brilliantly balances satire with suspense while creating this playful yet riveting storyline. He asks. . . Whether redemption is possible; can the past ever truly stay buried? If you are looking for an afternoon filled with twists, laughs and a cast of unforgettable characters, then this book is for you.
I enjoyed it, Pleasant way to spend a raining afternoon wrapped in a cozy blanket, a cup of tea and this cozy black comedy.
The title intrigued me, and I plunged in for a relaxing read that made me laugh. As a senior myself, I was in no way offended by the stereotypes and thought Craig got the satire just right.
I’m normally not a fan of cozy mysteries, but I found this story to be thoroughly entertaining. It was a very fun read.
Very entertaining. In this dark time, I needed something lighthearted (if murder can be lighthearted.)
The possibility of this book being a mystery-based satire recently crossed my mind, too! I cannot think of any books that fit this description. Perhaps The Winshaw Legacy by Jonathan Coe does? Any suggestions?
I’d read a few disappointing mysteries the past few weeks - this book completely broke the reading slump I was in. It was a quick read, with some excellent plot twists (but not so many it becomes ridiculous), and captivating characters.
As others have said, it was fun and easy. I felt too many of the characters and situations came across as cliches. I didn’t enjoy this nearly as much as The Thursday Murder Club series or Marlow Murder Club.
I absolutely loved it! Well written, interesting characters, lots of humor. As a senior myself I found it to be so refreshing for its understanding of some of the inconveniences of age. Frequent surprises just added to the fun. It’s a perfect read when you want a high quality quick read. The book is much better than I expected. Also, I appreciate Carol’s (?) comments about deeper questions that are raised.
Overall, I enjoyed it. There were plenty of funny moments, and some of the characters reminded me of people that I work with daily. It was a cute, easy to read book.
Totally agree. I loved the short chapters as well.
I was surprised to really love the book. I especially appreciated that the characters were mature adults with freedom to participate as they wanted. The book was very well written and a thoroughly fun read. I would like to see a sequel!
I thought this was a fun and quick read. A much needed palette cleanser after reading several thrillers this year. It was well written with plenty of humor and likeable, if not quite relatable, characters.
This book was an amazing read. I was worried it was going to be another Thursday Murder Club. It was so much more. Carol the serial killer was a wonderful twist on the genre. I loved the humor. It was fresh and very funny
I loved this book. The title was great and the characters were diverse and interesting.
I thought it was a really fun, quick read. It made me laugh out loud a few times.
It was a quick overall fun read that didn’t tax the brain like some other stories I’ve read recently. A good break.
Thoroughly enjoyed this one! I’m a big fan of characters who appreciate sarcasm, and there was plenty of that here with just enough of the “twisted” to keep my interesting throughout.
I thought this book was very fun. Easier than a lot of what I’ve been reading, so very much a pleasure!
