Overall, what did you think of Broken Country? (no spoilers, please!)
Too much going on! It was compelling enough for me to continue reading but I felt it was overpacked and near the end, I felt like there was emotional clickbait so to speak. Not as overrated as The Women, but still it was only 3 stars from me.
I agree with Evonne. The storyline kept me engaged, but at times the book seemed like a modern day romance novel.
I liked the book. I liked how it was told. We were kept in the dark about a lot! The author told us what she wanted us to know in her own time! I enjoyed the characters. A well written book, a fast read and good discussion for bookclubs.
I enjoyed the book a lot and it kept me engaged. I found the characters interesting and did like the “mystery” woven through the story.
I liked this book a lot and was surprised several times by the secrets that unfolded. I am not a “romance genre” person; this book was more realistic about how life events can evolve.
I’m glad I stuck with it. Found it difficult to follow in the beginning because I sensed “something” was missing. But as the story unfolded, I enjoyed it.
I truly loved this book not only because of its endearing characters but the weaving of a story for the ages. Love, murder, lies, secrets, tragedy and hope- this book had it all!
I enjoyed the book. Will recommend to friends.
I liked this book a lot. It kept me engrossed and constantly wondering how it would turn out. I had just finished An Unfinished Love Story by Doris Kearns Goodwin - a wonderful book, but it took me a long time to finish. Broken Country was a fast read. I really appreciate how BookBrowse introduces me to so many different kinds of books.
At first I felt confused as something was not making sense but as the story unfolded I was invested in finding out what was going on. I’m not much of a romance reader but this had enough mystery to keep me invested in Beth’s life. The twist and turns at the end were worth it and the ending, well it was a tear jerker for me!! I didn’t think I was going to like this book but in the end I really enjoyed it!
I loved this book! It was suspenseful, including courtroom scenes, love scenes and beautiful relationships that truly show real life. It’s a compelling story that kept me enthralled.
It’s hard not to recommend a book. Somebody will like it. I found it to be like watching a soap opera, each chapter an episode with some startling discovery or surprise at the end — then cut to commercial. It was also a bit bizarre, like soaps. A man who can afford 20 care givers, baby sitters, nannies, etc. decides that the only person qualified to care for his child is an ex-lover, a rustic country girl. And why would his son be obsessed with her dead child? Is that what young boys think about? And really, a farm girl who suddenly has no chores ??? goes off and spends all day with her lover, then comes home to her faithful devoted husband – “Hi honey, I’m home until tomorrow when I go see my lover…I mean babysit.” If you like soap operas, you will love this book.
I did like the book. It was easy to read and I read it quickly. I will recommend it to my fellow readers.
I really enjoyed this and have already recommended it. While there were some common plot points.. they were brought together in a way that seemed fresh to me. I also enjoyed the setting.
It is one of my top reads of the year.
Loved it! It will be in my top reads for 2025!
As I read these replies, I was clearly in the minority. It was too much a soap opera and infuriating that Beth and Gabriel made such bad choices. I did like the gradual unfolding of the mystery and trial. It’s interesting that the only other reader that really didn’t like it was male!
@Barbette_T I’m kind of in the same boat in that I had a problem with the relationship between the two characters, and at first it was a barrier to my enjoyment of the novel. I tried to keep in mind that they were very young when the book opens - in their mid-20s, I think, if my math is right - and so in the time of life when they’re questioning the directions their lives are going. I thought it was very realistic from that standpoint. But yeah, it wasn’t my favorite part of the book. And like you, I did enjoy the mystery & the trial.
This has been my #1 read so far this year. I loved the story, the writing, the layout of the chapters, the emotions, the characters. It is a gorgeous novel.
