Opal Viola remembers hearing, “A nation is not conquered until the hearts of its women are on the ground. Then it is finished, no matter how brave its warriors or how strong its weapons.” What do you think of this statement?

Many Native American tribes are matriarchal in structure, where women hold key decision-making roles, so this statement makes absolute sense.

I think it is true. Mothers are most often the primary caregivers and as such, the transmitters of their heritage.

Agree with a lot of the thoughts above. I think even beyond Native cultures, this is a common trope that women are 1) transmitters of culture/history and 2) fierce caregivers that protect their own. It’s a nice reflection on soft power over sheer physical strength and dominance.

I agree with the other comments. It certainly was also the case with my grandmother from Slovakia.

Strong women and strong voices

I think women are the core of any civilization. They’re generally the ones who keep culture alive, I think.
