Olivia enjoys The Wild Goose Resort but thinks that if she had the money, she likely wouldn’t spend it at a place like that, instead traveling to the Azores or the Amalfi Coast. (pp 139-140). What about you? Would you spend time at the resort? What would be your ideal vacation if you had the funds available?
I’ve never stayed at a resort so I think it could be fun to try it. My ideal vacation is a cruise to places that take me to historical and cultural spots vice read about. One of my favorite cruises was a trip through the Panama Canal. I like to experience more than just one setting.
I’ve been fortunately enough to get to stay at a resort here in the PNW a couple of times - Skamania Lodge - and it was always fun and relaxing. We couldn’t afford to stay more than a night or two, but it was always a nice treat. But if I had to choose, I think it would always been somewhere away from people, like backpacking in the North Cascades or the Wallowas (both PNW wilderness areas).
It’s interesting, because that line really stuck with me when I read it. I am very near retirement, and happen to be thinking a lot about where I want to visit while I still can. Like you said, I have been fortunate enough to have spent some time at resorts similar to “The Wild Goose” before and enjoyed myself. That said, I think that future travel will almost certainly be to more diverse and exciting locations (I personally love both her ideas of the Azores and the Amalfi Coast!). I also think that had I been in a situartion where I did not travel much, a resort would not be my first choice either. I think that Olivia was expressing a sentiment many in a similar situation might concur with. It is so nice to be able to do a resort style visit when someone else is bearing the cost, leaving you the opportunity to spend your own hard earned funds on something completely different.
I think it would be fun and relaxing to spend time at a resort. I have heard of extended families having a vacation at a resort so they could easily enjoy activities together. This appeals to me. But if I had the money and was on my own, my first choice would be to travel to major cities throughout the world.
Having been raised in a family always on the brink of bankruptcy I am very thoughtful with my money. I will not buy a $200 T-Shirt, and when I travel I want to be comfortable, but it doesn’t have to be luxurious. That being said, on the few occasions when someone else was paying I did enjoy being pampered. Travel abroad has its charms, but sometimes you just want to relax, be pampered and not think about where I have to be next.
I recently had a wonderful vacation. I just returned from two weeks in Spain. That is why I am a week late in joining the book club.
I don’t have much interest in staying at a resort. I would much rather spend my money on a European cruise or traveling through Ireland, Wales, and Scotland learning more about my heritage. I also love visiting plantations, historic homes, and gardens here in the USA. My sister has been working on our family tree, and I think it would be really meaningful to visit some of the places where my ancestors once lived
