Nick recruits Matthew in a scheme to thwart Levi’s plans for the startup company. What has Nick learned from his own conception and experiences with Big Pharma that influenced this choice?
Nick realizes there is a line, a boundary that science ought not to cross when messing with DNA. He has to be aware of how manipulating his genetic code affected his life and relationships, especially after connecting with his grandmother, May.
There is a fine line when it comes to scientific discovery and moral and ethical issues. I think Nick understood from his own family experiences and how scientific interference influenced his own family dynamics that this was a line not to cross, I believe he realized he couldn’t trust his boss not to cross that line. This was a chance in Nicks eyes, for his father to prove his love to him.
Nick was directly affected by scientific “advancement”, and the rippling effects as well. He saw a chance to thwart other people suffering from similar experiments.
Nick has always been driven to feel as though what he does with his life has meaning. Asking Matthew to help him stop this one effort was a way for him to make a contribution. Although he recognized that he could not stop every attempt to use genetic science nefariously, he seemed to finally understand that doing what was in his power to do was enough.
Having experienced the affects of DNA experiments in his life, with his family members, he realizes that there is a line that should not be crossed. Nick truly believes that Levi can’t be trusted to not cross that line and his one choice to see that it doesn’t happen on his watch. That choice was his father, asking him to do so was the one effort both of them could agreed on.
