Nell and Emily ended up living in rural communities while Annie was determined to stay in the city. Why do you suppose the girls developed such different desires as they grew older? Do you consider yourself a country girl or a city girl?
I live in the suburbs, but I consider myself a “country” girl. I don’t like to go into town.
I like my small community shopping centers.
I have one sister a year younger. She loves the country but I’m a city girl. I never went to overnight summer camp growing up because I didn’t like bugs or anything else running around. My sister loved visiting my parents at their country house in the Tidewater area of Virginia. I usually only lasted a few days and I was ready to return to “civilization” . So I am not at all surprised that the sisters gravitated to different lifestyles.
We’re juggling two houses; one suburban and one rural in two very different communities while we figure out our next steps. I’m a middle of the road person. I want the benefits of a city near by and the escapism of the country. Suburbia is my place
People are affected by experiences and others. I think Annie was influenced by the customers at the store and thought that would make her happy/make life easier than she and her family had. It would have been interesting if she went down the path she actually wanted.
I live for being outside, and backpacking is a passion of mine. I love getting away from people! It sometimes sounds appealing to live “off the grid,” but in the long run I don’t think I’d be at all happy living in the country. I like my creature comforts too much. I live within walking distance of a gym, a brewpub, a grocery store, restaurants and food carts, light rail… Not to mention having music and theater nearby, too.
I think Annie was different from her sisters. She craved the excitement of the city. I consider myself a country girl. I love seeing farms and open spaces and nature where I live.
I think friends and experiences can draw us to different ways of life. My preferences are definitely with Annie - I am a “city girl”. I enjoy experiencing different environments, but my ideal vacation has always been to a new city. And I have always made it a point to live where there is bus or train transportation within walking distance. In suburbs and small towns, I have needed to have shops and community places I can walk to, as well as that transportation to the downtown of a nearby city. I would never be happy living in the country or in a subdivision where I needed a car to get to anything other than other houses. I have three sisters who are pretty much the same, although maybe prefer their suburbs to going into the city’s downtown as much as I like to do.
I think it had to do with the men they fell in love with. The men laid the path for their new lives. I am definitely a city gir.
I think individual personalities and experiences can shape your life choices. Nell and Emily may have liked the slower pace of life and possibly the comfort from childhood memories. Annie, seemed to have more ambition and liked the excitement and independence of the city life. I think she liked the glitz and glamour whereas Nell and Emily like the quieter way of life.
I’m a city and country person. I live in a city but I love the country at times too.
I think that the two sisters had very different views of life and each one of them migrated to the life that they loved best. I grew up in a big city, then moved to the country and am now back in the city. I enjoyed living in the country but am really a city girl at heart.
Different people, different personalities. I’m a country girl who prefers nature and quiet.
