Many characters get unexpected second chances. Which character’s transformation moved you most? Do you believe we all deserve second chances?
Gabrielle. Her career got the chance it deserves. It is hard to work through what Max did to her. Also, when people find out, it is rough. Some believe and some don’t. Plus she got a second chance at love with Devlin.
Walter’s did. I was so happy that he not only survived his cancer diagnosis, but that he found love and purpose in his life at the end of the novel.
Gabrielle was the most changed. She was in hiding in he shop, hoping no one would notice her. She was afraid to be herself and to trust other people. Afraid someone would find out her secret.
It is hard to answer this question because each character was likeable and deserving of their second chance in their own way. Walter found a purpose. Gabrielle found strength, courage, self-worth, self love, and her voice. Devlin found a second chance at love and maybe some self forgiveness. Even Clara (the violin) was reunited with her true love.
I was moved by Gabrielle’s transformation. She was lonely and suffering with a problem she was embarrassed to discuss or delve into. She also carried the lie of her father’s whereabouts. I could almost compare her to Clara, in that the destiny of her youth was out of her own hands. Although she was given time to grow and understand life. Yes, I believe most people deserve a second chance.
I think all were compelling in different ways but I guess the one I felt most happy for was Devlin. He was so sweet throughout the book and was willing to take chances, even though he may not have been aware he was doing just that. And his actions, ultimately, brought joy to the other protagonists.
It seemed all the characters were transformed in some way but I th8nk Gabrielle’s was the most moving for me because she had multiple traumas to overcome.
I liked all of the transformations. I think Gabrielle’s moved me the most. She overcame a lot and in the end did the right thing.
Absolutely agree and love how you summed up your response!
Walter was Ove in a Man Called Ove. If this book is made into a movie, Tom Hanks should play Walter!![]()
Although all the main characters changed quite a bit during the course of the narrative, I think Walter changed the most. At the beginning of the story we find a sick man on the verge of taking his own life. By the end of the book, he is no longer ill, has a sense of purpose, and maybe even a new love interest.
Each of the 3 characters had major transformations throughout the story so it is very hard for me to pick one over the other. I really liked Walter and Devlin and am happy that Walter was alive at the end of the story, and ready to enjoy life to the fullest. (I felt the whole cancer part of the story could have been left out and I would have still loved Walter.) Devlin deserved to grow up and become a special person in someone’s life.
I think Gabrielle’s transformation was the most for me. She really came out of her shell and was able to stand up for her younger self and move past her experiences.
All of the transformations moved me but especially Devlin. After being in love with someone who didn’t appreciate him, he found love and the desire to do his music again. Everyone deserves a second chance in life.
Several of the main characters get second chances, but I could best relate to Gabrielle. She was able to overcome her childhood trauma from Max and was able to find love with Devlin as well. Her path to transformation wasn’t easy or rapid, but that made the novel more believable.
I agree with Linda about Walter’s transformation. I think Gabrielle’s transformation was the most noticeable for me. She was living such as small, lonely existence of regret and shame. She had a good therapist who helped her discover so much about herself and great friends in Walter and Devlin who drew her back into life.
