Kit thinks, “[This guard] has a gun and he believes in it, just as he believes women shouldn’t smoke or wear trousers...His Paris is not her Paris, but his Paris snakes through hers, unavoidable” (p.30). What did you think about her observations?

When Kit and Max approach a checkpoint, Kit initially has sympathy for the young man checking papers. Then she thinks, “But he has a gun and he believes in it, just as he believes women shouldn’t smoke or wear trousers. Or, presumably, sleep with other women. His Paris is not her Paris, but his Paris snakes through hers, unavoidable…” (p.30). What did you think about her observations here?

I think Kit’s observations are “right on”. She sees the big picture in this situation where the young man actually believes he is on the “right side” of the conflict. These views don’t coincide with Kit’s. Kit knows, in her heart, this young man’s views are dangerous ones that can’t be avoided. Paris as she knows it is at risk.

Kit’s observation was important to her survival. Knowing how others think, or might respond, especially in this situation, will often determine one’s own attitude or action.
