Kate Atkinson books (Jackson Brodie: Death at the sign of the rook)

I tried this Jackson Brodie series book because it was recommended as the best of
her mysteries. I am on page 72 and I QUIT. I love mysteries, from Agatha Christie on, especially stories about the Brits and about their courage thru WWI & II. But this book has the slowest start I have ever encountered. Yes, she has humor and a knack for describing characters. But the PLOT should keep moving on, not dawdling. I am so surprised to see this book recommended.

I read this over a year ago but I remember enjoying it very much. It was my first in the series, as well. I just checked my GoodReads review. I rated it 5 stars. My review mentioned that it took about 40% to introduce the full array of characters. And then things started to take off from there.
