The only book that ever kept me from sleeping was Salem’s Lot by Stephen King, although I’d rank several of his among my favorites (especially The Shining and the first 80% of It).

I love scary books but haven’t really found one in a long time. Very curious to see if this group will have any suggestions.

I like some of the older ones: Bram Stoker’s Dracula and The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson.

Dracula is a favorite, but I grew up with the legend so I don’t find it particularly scary - too well-known. (My father’s family is from the Transylvanian Alps and he never tired of regaling us with folklore.)

Yeah, I prefer creepy over scary I guess! The Descent by Jeff Long is the scariest book I’ve ever read (I stay away from Stephen King / reading horror on purpose).

Shirley Jackson’s The Lottery is perhaps the most haunting thing I’ve ever read. Granted it’s not a novel but it packs quite a punch.

The Exorcist, which I read before the creepy movie was released. Scared me!

If you haven’t read Stephen Graham Jones Buffalo Hunter Hunter…. So good! Dracula is my all time favorite but this book may take its place! The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty scared the pants off me when I was a high school ! Haven’t read it since :joy:

I stay away from horror, but have read a few in the past; Exorcist, Dracula, Exorcist, Amityville Horror, Rosemary’s Baby. I definitely don’t have a favorite, but the book that scared me the most was Salem’s Lot by Stephen King.
