Also, the author’s estate provided a Recommended Reading List (see below). Which of these have you read? Are there others you’d add?

The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin

Nobody Knows My Name by James Baldwin

The Amen Corner by James Baldwin

Playing in the Dark by Toni Morrison

Culture and Imperialism by Edward W. Said

Monsters by Claire Dederer

Bottoms Up and the Devil Laughs by Kerry Howley

The Secret History of Wonder Woman by Jill Lepore

Multiple times while reading this book it brought to mind Ta-Nehisi Coates’ book Between the World and Me. Both were somewhat epistolary and explored identity in young black men, eventhough they represented experiences from different decades in America. Both books expanded my understanding of how I may be regarded by others and how that understanding can help bridge cultural gaps.

I agree—was just going to say this. He’s the only similar writer I could think of.

I was drawing a blank until I read your reply and agree with you.. It could be an interesting discussion to compare/contrast these two books in a book group.
