It’s been a while since I read the book but still nothing stands out. This book just didn’t resonate with me.

Yes - “Everything seems like nonsense until you have an explanation for it.”, on page 67. How many times have we heard something unbelievable that we were too quick to dismiss, but then if we took the time to actually explore it further we may be surprised to learn that it’s true.

On page 360, “When she was young, Kit used to believe that the tears that sprang to her eyes in church were proof of the existence of God; now she believes that the song didn’t connect her to something sacred; they created it.” I think that music can connect us to something sacred and can create something sacred.

The part where Mr. Yardley answers Ivy’s question “Why a woman?” by explaining his views on the feminine impulse based on “oldest of times”. He says there’s a reason it is called Mother Nature. He goes on to say “it is not supernatural but essentially natural. A way of seeing the true nature of all things.” As a reader, I can believe this. We often describe things and attribute them to “Mother Nature”.

“Survival is the only thing there is. Everything else is a fairy tale. Martyrs are not remembered by the dead. It’s easy to die for a cause, but it doesn’t help those who must keep doing, after.” That statement from Evelyn says everything about her philosophy and outlook, and mimics the way so many people feel. Especially when facing extraordinary circumstances during a war.

“Is it possible that something that seems like magic to us now will be science to later generations, who learn to understand it?” That sums up the book’s thesis for me, and is a question that I’m sure has been pondered by many generations.

Yes - “She has never put any of this into words before. Here, in this hellscape, with the ghost of her sister always at the edges of her vision, every old fear seems flimsy and inconsequential. What does it matter if they hurt each other tomorrow? Tomorrow is a dream. Today is real, and today requires her to be the best she can. There is no room for anything but naked honesty in this moment. There is only Kit, and the people she loves, and what she is willing to do for them.” - Page 227. I think this passage resonated with me because it seemed to be a defining moment for her regarding her beliefs about her life (and herself) and the way she wanted to live and conduct herself.
