Is there a quote or scene in the novel that stood out for you? Why do you suppose it resonated?
There was one scene in which Ella’s childhood friend says that when people flee their home / home country, this arrests their emotional development. This definitely seemed to be the case for Ella, and it was a reminder to look at one’s own past with fresh eyes, and not just stick to the narrative formulated in one’s youth / younger days.
There were several scenes and quotes that stood out to me, here are just a few. I liked Verity very much. Some of her dialogue and situation reminded me of the movie “You’ve Got Mail”. It didn’t make her feelings any less real or valid, however.
Where Ella tells Pru “ Mum’s life hadn’t been the dream you’ve created in your head?” And the discussion that follows is very real. While we often show our “ best selves” most, if not all of us have struggles and hard realities we deal with every day.
I remembered the quote Andrew sites from Anne of Avonlea and while it’s not easy to do, it is worth trying to do it.
"Comparison is the thief of joy. That’s what they say, isn’t it?"
This was said by Pru on page 265 when she was explaining why she resented Sally.
I underlined with quote, because it really made me stop and think about how often we compare ourselves to others and think others have it better than we do. However, when we do this we miss out on the joy we could find in what we do have.
Thanks for the correction, @Dianne_Y! I’ve fixed the question where this is directly referenced.
I agree , the statement you left home as a teenager and that’s how you remembered the incident.
I’ll just insert the beginning of the quote as it’s lengthy.
On pg. 230 when Andrew speaks of all books being precious because “Each one contains someone’s thoughts and feelings…” This resonated with me because it was just so beautifully stated and maybe is not something we always think about when reading someone’s words on paper.
I totally agree with Laurie M’s response. Everyone’s book experience is different, and we take away things that resonate with us.
