I loved this quote from early on - “Frank described reading as experiencing another world, inhabiting the mind of someone else, seeing through their eyes, feeling their emotions.” This is so much of why I love to read.

This is a wonderful quote and through Frank, was something that the Silent Book Group embraced.

One of the many scenes that I liked was when Grace read Frank’s journal entry about the book Demon Copperhead (p. 150 - 151) in which he described why members read and the coamraderoe that develops as a result of their time together.

Two quotes stood out for me:

First, Annie, talking about book club making her feel less alone, and likening it to novels. “When I read something that I recognize, even if it’s not the full story, it could be a line, you know, or a phrase that touches something inside me and it makes me feel seen and understood.”(p71)

I really connected to this. It’s why, us readers, fall in love with books. We can relate, we feel seen.

And the second one, Crush, during the Desert Island Reads interview. “Frank was a legend. A lot of readers are. I don’t know if it’s because readers get used to seeing the world through other people’s eyes and that makes them more empathetic, more accepting and less judgmental?” (p213)

I love this. It’s so true and so relevant to the times.

I especially liked the scene when they were recording their Desert Island Reads. It gives the reader a glimpse of how books can profoundly affect people. I also enjoyed the scenes between Annie and Grace because it shows the importance of having good friends to share problems with and to lift each other up.

I liked the description of Frank on page 93. He was a man with only two settings, and they were always at the ends of the spectrum, enormous amounts of natural light, or soft lamplight. That was Frank all over. One extreme or another.
