Is Nathaniel truly drawn to Evelyn, or do you think he is just trying to get Lady Violet's attention and playing her at her own game?

Is Nathaniel truly drawn to Evelyn, or do you think he is just trying to get Lady Violet’s attention and playing her at her own game?

I believe Evelyn interested him with her opinions and self assurance unlike many women of her day. However, he indeed was pursuing Lady Violet.

This is a tough question. It would seem that Lady Violet imagined Nathaniel’s interest but there were a few instances where it seemed he was truly interested in her. Perhaps he was trying to get into her good graces to further his financial and social status.

Nathaniel was a lost soul. He did not think he could have who he wanted, Violet, so he was willing to take the next best thing, Evelyn.

I don’t think he was ever really interested in Evelyn, and that he was just using her to make Lady Violet jealous.

I think Nathaniel was pursuing Violet, but thought she was not interested. I think he did use Evelyn to try to make Violet jealous, but that he did find Evelyn a bit intriguing.

I think Nathaniel was only interested in Lady Violet. He wanted to be interested in Evelyn because he didn’t feel as though his feelings were reciprocated by Lady Violet, but in the end, he wasn’t fooling anyone but himself.

Poor Nathaniel. I think he was drawn to Evelyn, maybe for fear that nothing better would come along, which seems to be normal for that time period. Lady Violet definitely had some issues. All because everyone wanted to appear to be something they were not.

I think initially Nathaniel was just trying to please Lady Violet, but bit by bit he came to appreciate Evelyn’s personality and to a degree, admire her. She wasn’t his first choice, but he probably would have “settled” for her without a whimper.

Nathaniel’s character was confusing for me - he hung around Lady Violet’s home, hoping to see her, but then seemed genuinely interested in Evelyn. And Lady Violet seemed dead set against him, since he was an untitled American. Then all of a sudden, they were in love and getting married. I didn’t think this part of the book and these characters were well written at all.
