Someone said All the Colors of the Dark gave her nightmares. I have it chosen for our next book club meeting. Do you recommend it? I haven’t read it.
Donna, I thought it was excellent. When I finished reading it, I passed it along to a friend and she couldn’t put it down either.
Thanks! When a lady said it gave her nightmares, I was worried about my book club reading it.
Donna—-no worries. All the Colors of the Dark is an intense book about the impact of childhood trauma and women’s rights but I think it would be an excellent book club discussion. If it helps it has an enriching ending.
Thanks for your help!
I loved it. It’s got lots of different subjects and themes which should make for a great discussion. Our book club just chose it for our November selection.
One of my book groups read it. Not an easy or light read, but it has lots of good themes and discussion points. Most of the book groups I belong to select books that are recommended by one or more members of the group who have read the book or are selected by the person who will lead the discussion who has also read the book. I spend considerable time getting ready to lead a discussion and always read the book before I agree to take on the facilitator role.
Thanks. I have learned that it is really important that someone read the book before it is chosen. I am the one always choosing and running the club, and they all seem to like that. It’s hard on me because I feel badly if they don’t like it.
Hi Donna,
@Elizabeth has an interesting way of choosing books for her club where they add suggestions that are drawn from a hat:
Even if you’re still the one making most of the suggestions, maybe that could take the pressure off if someone ends up not liking it. But you also shouldn’t feel bad if you’re the one doing all the work to facilitate, organize, and suggest the books to be read!
Thanks. I know I shouldn’t feel badly, but I do. I actually started reading All The Colors of the Dark, and I found it disturbing. Since I have started my book club I have learned two important things. Everyone has a different “take” on each book. It’s okay for people to like or actually hate the book. And someone should absolutely read the book before it is chosen.
