In what ways do you feel Monife and Eniiyi sabotaged their relationships with men?
Although we know more about these two women, I’d argue that Ebun sabotaged her relationships as well.
But If Monife hasn’t acted so possessive and jealous, I’m not sure if her relationship with Golden Boy would have disintegrated. And Eniiyi sleeping with her friend (can’t remember his name) out of loneliness or revenge (and then telling Zubby about it!) definitely seemed like a deliberate attempt to blow things up.
Monife believes harm is unavoidable because of curse and keeps an emotional distance. She ties to manage her relationships on her terms and never fully trusting it, therefore, choosing fear over being open.
Eniiyi leans into the belief that she won’t be able to escape her fate. She doesn’t invest in her relationships and it allows for emotional distance to grow and then wither away.
While I think the “curse” gave a lot of men permission to do what they wanted to do and probably would have done anyway in terms of leaving their women, interestingly the two men who most likely wouldn’t have done that were nonetheless driven away by Mo and Eniiyi due to believe in the curse.
I felt they were both too needy. I don’t know if the difference in class played into that. He has so much he can give me something. They were both color struck. The dark skinned boys were never really given a chance with either of them. So I found them both to be attracted to the superficial and am not sure if a long term relationship would have been sustainable.
Their beliefs sabotaged relationships with men. “I want you. I love you. I need you. However, I’m cursed.” Their strong belief in the curse as well as Eniiyi fighting the constant reminder of her similarity to Monife dominated their behaviors and actions. Eniiyi had to leave in order to return home to a newer life.
