In thinking about Niamh’s investigation into her mother’s death, is there anything you would have done differently? If so, what, and why?
I thought it was a mistake to leave up her version of a murder board when asking someone to come care for the cat. Possibly the author was leaving this open to make the neighbor appear guilty. The murder board in general did not seem to be to disguised.
Niamh was dealing with grief and, it seemed, with some depression. I do wish she would have found more inner strength when Leah first appeared to her. If Lotz wants us to accept Leah as “real” then would Niamh have cowered and fled into the bathroom instead of questioning her own sanity? But this book is a fantasy mystery. A bit strange for my reading tastes although the story kept me wondering, and the settings were appealing.
Since Niamh was the only one that could see Leah it made me wonder about mental health more than anything. I kind of wish everyone could see her and that she’d stepped out of her book.
Good point Laura. It would have been better in my thoughts to have been able to have someone other than Niamh see her. Perhaps the author’s agent, members of the festival?
Even though the author wants her readers to accept Leah as real, I was taken back by Niamh’s odd way of hiding from her. I realize this is a fantasy mystery, but I often found myself wondering why the author chose to do make it happen in a certain way.
