In an exchange between Semiramis and Nisat, Nisat states she finds that “the less people have been given in life, the more eager they are to prove themselves.” Do you think Nisat’s statement holds true? Which characters, do you think, are trying to prove themselves? To whom?
Nisat’s point hits on something pretty universal—when life throws obstacles your way, it often pushes you to prove yourself even more. Whether it’s dealing with a lack of resources, low status, or strict expectations, those challenges can light a fire under people to show their value to themselves, others, or the world. Tough times often end up being a big motivator for growth and success.
There are a few characters this would apply to, but let’s take Ninus. He works to prove his strength, leadership, and worthiness to both Semiramis and his people. His desire to gain approval and respect reflects his internal conflict about whether he can meet the expectations placed upon him as a warrior and leader.
I agree, when you have a challenge you can either work harder and achieve the goal and often go beyond it OR be a person that gives in. Most people do not like to be categorized as a failure so they will work hard to prove that they have been misjudged and are successful.
Betty did a great job of discussing Ninus. So another example would be Semiramis. She was an orphan, who had a mother that was not married and experiencing mental challenges. Next she becomes a servant for her adopted father, and endures multiple beatings and humiliation from the village. But from this she becomes a Queen in a society that did not support women leadership. Rather amazing!
