Great question, Margot! Thanks for posting it. I’ll be back… need to give this one some thought!

I noticed that Mebel likes to beat people to the punch when it comes to her age. Similar to how she owns her identity as a “trophy wife” and pokes fun at herself and others like her, she often tells others her age in a self-deprecating, humorous way. They often respond with reassurances that she can still do the thing regardless of her age.

One way the author deals with the topic of loneliness is by employing the “fish out of water” trope. This puts Mebel in uncomfortable situations that she ironically wanted to be in (i.e. alone in a foreign country in culinary school) where she is forced to be vulnerable, thereby opening herself up to new relationships.
