How does Lies and Weddings amplify the decadence of other novels by Kevin Kwan that you have enjoyed? In what ways does this storyline take the ride to a whole new level? To what audience would you recommend the book? Is there another book or author you feel addresses parallel themes or has a similar style?
It really amps up the decadence compared to his other books—there’s even more luxury, over-the-top events, and jaw-dropping settings. It feels like a wild mix of old money, new money, and total chaos. I’d recommend it to anyone who loves drama, fashion, and social satire. I don’t usually read these kinds of flashy, dramatic books, but I devoured Crazy Rich Asians, and that made me want to give this one a try.
I would definitely recommend this book to someone looking for a light, entertaining read. It is a beach read but with slightly more substance.
After reading Crazy Rich Asians years ago, I went into reading this one with some expectations regarding the type of characters we might meet - stereotypical wealthy, materially driven, brand-obsessed Asians as well as manipulative, guilt-inducing mothers. I was not disappointed.
As far as similar books and/or authors, the family dynamics and family drama reminds of some of the scenarios played out in books by Jessie Q Sutanto.
I would have to agree with Gabi above. It is a glorified beach read but entertaining all around. The decadence is extreme from the very first page. It reads much like Kwan’s other novels and can easily be pictured on the big screen.
I thought he had said it all with The Crazy Rich Asians trilogy, but Kevin Kwan continues to amp up the decadence without feeling repetitive. I agree with Liz about picturing it on the big screen. Ever since the Crazy Rich Asians movie, I’ve been waiting for the next Kevin Kwan film.
I really loved this book. The decadence is over the top, yet at times very funny. It will make a great movie can’t wait. I’ll definitely recommend it to all my friend and book clubs
Monica_M, I couldn’t agree with you more! I loved the movie Crazy Rich Asians and watch it many times over. I also read the book as well as China Rich Girlfriend. So I had definitely plan to read this one even if I hadn’t been lucky enough to be gifted one via BookBrowse (Thank you!)
I look forward to the movie but I think it will cost twice as much to produce! They should definitely do this one over China Rich Girlfriend.
I agree! As others have mentioned in the question about the weddings, some things were so extravagant they were hard to imagine, and I think a movie could help with that, at least for me. And definitely prefer it over China Rich Girlfriend.
