How do you think Grace changes over the course of the novel?
Grace becomes more engaged with life. She develops friendships and has someone to walk with and to meet for coffee and tea. As the club begins plans to expand, she finds a new purpose for her life and a community with a shared purpose. She also opens her heart and becomes more accepting of people and circumstances.
I agree with Patricia’s response - find it to be so very true!
Grace finally opens up to new experiences and meeting new people. For so long, she had had enough in her life: Frank, her daughter, grandson, and her job. But now, she realizes she depends on her daughter and grandson, and really has no one else. It was delightful to see her become friends with everyone in the group, even those who seemed to have nothing in common.
I agree Grace becomes more involved in life and new friendships open up to her .
Grace finds a purpose in her life again and it even surprises her when she realizes this
I initially found Grace to be judgmental and somewhat rigid over the course of the novel, Grace learned to discard some of her more rigid opinions of family especially. She learned to be more understanding and compassionate. Grace also learned to accept others and changed her idea that people should be perfectly adjusted. She discovered she could be more likable to herself and others.
During the course of this book Grace makes many changes. Initially I thought she was rather rigid in her thinking and unwilling to try new things. By the end of the novel she had done a complete metamorphosis. She became open to new ideas, even taking on a leading role in the plan for expanding the book club, making new friends, and entertaining the idea that a new romance would be what Frank would have wanted for her.
Grace finds herself as a valuable person in her own right as she deals with the various characters in the Silent Book Club. She had always kept in the shadow of her husband. It is surprising to her that other people find her loving and caring. She discovers she has a lot to offer to others who are hurting. She finds that she can handle being in charge and “running the show.”
At the beginning, Grace’s life was centered on her grief over the loss of her husband. During the course of the book, she began to let other people in her life. The grief was still there but it became a smaller part of her life instead of the main part of her life.
