How did the last lines make you feel? Did they make you keep thinking about what would happen next for the characters?
Interesting question. Since Effie’s father is still around and wanting to ensure his granddaughter is looked after I sensed maybe there could a follow up book. It does end somewhat unresolved.
I actually thought the whole ending was kind of creepy and very much unresolved. I did feel like Effie’s dad was sincere but it all felt very unresolved.
Maybe Effie’s father will be there for Anya, since some of the other men are no longer a threat. I was glad that Anya still has her mother and Effie won’t have to be the person ultimately responsible for her. This gives Effie a lot of leeway with her future.
I found the ending leaving room for a second book. But even if there isn’t a second book the ending spoke to the arrogance of individuals like Adam who have a warped sense of their ability to control others. They are not concerned with the individuals they hurt or the consequences of their actions, they believe in their omnipotence and will contnue to manipulate and hurt until they are caught.
The last lines left me wondering what would be next, if a follow up book is written. I would definitely read it.
It definitely seemed to be paving the way for a sequel. We have the unresolved questions of Effie’s dad (Cameron), and Anya’s dad (Adam/Asher), with notes from both of them appearing.
My reaction was, “Guess there’s definitely a sequel coming.”
I thought that the ending was a good way to close out a mystery, leaving the reader wondering about all of the events and how they fit together. I really hope that the ending was not a cheap trick to lead the way to a sequel.
I’m in agreement with you. I can wonder about their future relationships, but another kidnapping or bush hunt wouldn’t work for me.
I imagined that the cycle would just continue, but in another secluded area.
I saw the note in the window as being authored by Adam/Asher and this ending reminded me of how horrible “love” can be. I fear for the “next one” who will be raised somewhere in the bush. The note does seem to open the door on a sequel, but I’m not interested in following the life of another terribly damaged girl raised to believe that her only option is silence and submission.

They were deeply disturbing. It made me think there was going to be trouble in the future.
