Has a book ever inspired you to visit a location? If so, which book, and where did you go?
Thank you that is such a relief to know that trick.
I think my reading has sparked a love of England. I haven’t traveled to the country yet, but if I ever have the chance that’s where I’d like to go (London in particular).
But possibly the book that sparked my interest in England was The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley. Although maybe it was Mary Stewart’s series (starting with The Crystal Cave).
West With the Night was so beautiful and vivid. It made me long to travel to Kenya. It was 20 years before I could, but I did go and it was everything I had hoped for and much more.
And, much closer to home, I visited Franklin, Tennessee and toured the mansion that inspired Widow of the South after reading it.
I can’t say that a specific book has inspired me to visit a specific site or location, but my love of reading and history have definitely enhanced my love of travel to National Park Service sites in the US. Whenever my husband and I visit a NPS site (park, monument, historic site, battlefield, etc.) we make it a point to purchase a book and bookmark related to the site in its bookstore. NPS bookstores are incredible. They contains books and merchandise usually not found in retail stores. We have learned so much about the history, environment, and people of the places we’ve visited this way. Yes, we pay more than the “Amazon” price for the books, but helping the NPS is so much more important to us.
