Genevieve asks Victoria to trust her, and Victoria responds with hostility (“No, Genevieve, that’s not possible.” p. 28). Why do you believe she replied the way she did? Did it surprise you?

Victoria was not happy to be there. She came due to the wishes of her husband, which in the end of the book we certainly know why! She did not want to talk about her sad childhood. She did not know anything about Genevieve, did not know her credentials. She was actually a hostile person.

Victoria wasn’t able to trust anyone but Andrew so it’s not surprising that she reacted that way

Victoria was definitely a strong minded woman, I was not surprised at her reaction.

I think it’s clear that Victoria responded that way because she had trouble trusting anyone. That would most likely be thanks to her unpredictable parents & childhood. Not surprising.

I agree with April’s that Victoria had a long history of being disappointed in people. I think Victoria preferred not to trust as a protection against being hurt.

Victoria comes across as a “I’m better than you and I don’t need to be here” type character. Her development in the book was good, and she becomes a much more likable character

Victoria is very guarded and does not let anyone in easily. Her husband convinced her to come to this group, and she did not know much about Genevieve’s credentials. I think I too would be skeptical.

Victoria was very guarded. Her husband recommended that she attend the group and she had to have proof that she could trust Genevieve before she could.

I was struck by the same as you about how Victoria came across ( “I’m better than you…”). I also wondered if she felt the others would not relate to her perspective because of her extensive professional experiences.

Victoria needed to be in charge. She led a very structured existence. She presented herself as “i’m much better” attitude.” It seemed the only person who could get to her coldness was Andrew, her husband. Yes, her warming up to others, indeed, did surprise me. I didn’t think she had a warm spot in her heart.
