For what audience would you recommend The Hunter’s Daughter? Is there another book or author you feel has a similar theme or style?
I have a friend who doesn’t care for creepy or violent or abuse in the books she reads, so I would not recommend this to her. However, I really enjoyed this book - it’s right up my alley! I recently read a psychological thriller called Gray After Dark by Noelle Ihli, and it’s also dark, creepy and violent. I am also reading Karin Slaughter’s latest (new character) called We Are All Guilty Here.
Funny, I had a couple of people opt out of reading the book because it was getting too gory for them. So I agree with @Julie_P that people who aren’t good with the occasional artistically posed corpse probably wouldn’t like it, but overall I thought most mystery readers would enjoy it. I know I did.
I was not sure if I really wanted to read this book but I did like it. It is a fast moving exciting, sometimes frightening mystery. I Would recommend this book to people who really enjoy mysteries and are not frightened by them! I would warn people about the shack.
I did enjoy this book even though I did find it very creepy. I definitely would not recommend it to the book club that I am in as there are a few members that would find it appalling. I would recommend this to someone who likes a very intriguing mystery with lots of twisted plot elements and characters.
I agree with all of you so have concluded I’d recommend the book to my creepy mysterious friends! And yes, I liked it.
When I enthusiastically recommended this book to a friend and gave her the very general plot, which of course included some fairly gory things, she was totally turned off. I was a little surprised as I am usually not one to like horror or gory plots, but I’m really glad I read this.
I would recommend The Hunter’s Daughter to readers who enjoy atmospheric, gritty, dark mysteries, and a bit of fantasy/magical realism. It would also appeal to those who enjoy in-depth studies of morally ambiguous characters.
I would definitely not recommend it to readers who eschew books with graphic details or focus on reading cozy mysteries.
I have several friends who will enjoy this book. As must as I enjoyed it, I don’t think my book group would like it. However, I will tell them about it and let them decide for themselves.
I feel like most people who enjoy mystery/thrillers would enjoy this book, but they might have to be careful if they don’t like gore. It wasn’t super explicit, but there is a lot of talk (and description) of death and the dead.
There were a lot of things swirling around in my head of what this made me think of. I was originally thinking of Castle (TV series) because of the police aspect, and killings. It felt like we were on our own detective journey. The other that came to me later was Gillian Flynn’s Sharp Objects.
I think a lot of people could get into it very quickly because of the writing style (I didn’t want to put it down!), and if they didn’t get to squeamish they might even enjoy it.
