Eunice and Polly formed an unlikely alliance to take down Lucky Luciano. What qualities are required to make these kinds of alliances successful? Can you think of other situations where women from different backgrounds came together to achieve a common goal?
Eunice and even Polly had to look past societal conventions to work with one another. Both women were strong and courageous.
Such an alliance as the one to bring down Lucky requires trust, and the relationship between Polly and Eunice was a precarious one. They were basically united by their common enemy, so a trust of sorts was formed. It also required secrecy and good communication to be successful, and these smart women managed to accomplish this. This kind of situation is not common; I am struggling to think of one!
The only thing that popped into my head was The Help. Earning the trust of someone who has no real reason to trust you is not easy. In both of these stories, the people who were spilling the beans really had to take a leap of faith because their lives could literally be on the line.
Both women needed to both trust each other. There was a mutual respect for each other. They both were driven by doing what is right and holding the men accountable for their crimes.
The same characteristics discussed in response to other questions apply to this question. Add to them discretion. The ability to coordinate their efforts clandestinely was critical to their success. It was extremely dangerous, and it’s fortunate that no harm came to either of them, Eunice’s family, or Polly’s employees.
