Do you read one book at a time or can you read multiple books at once?

I can ONLY read one book at a time.

I’m with you on that, Elizabeth! I know a lot of people who read multiples, but if I tried that, I fear I’d end up reading the one I was enjoying the most anyway, and neglecting the others.

I do listen to an audiobook at the same time I’m reading (not at the exact same time; you know what I mean…). But I have to be careful to not choose an audiobook that’s too similar to my book-book or I get them confused.

I’m curious how people do read more than one at at time.

That probably would happen, Kim - neglect the one that isn’t as enjoyable, but more likely I would be totally getting confused. LOL!!!

I usually read to review, and reading more than one would definitely “mess up” my thoughts.

I can’t read more than one book at a time, but similar to Kim I know some people feel comfortable with audio books while they’re reading a different physical book.

I read anywhere from 2 to 4 books at a time. The books are generally different genres so I don’t confuse them. Also, I am an ebook and audiobook reader. I rarely read a physical book anymore.

I generally have 2-4 books going at once, at least one physical and one on my kindle. But, the trick is all the books have to be wildly different so I don’t get them confused!

I can only read one book at a time—and even then I’m not always able to keep things straight! A friend said she can read a print book, listen to an audio, and download an e-book at the same time but, as someone else said earlier, they all have to be totally different so she can keep track of them. Not for me, though!

Good to hear you are one-book reader too.

I could never do all of those with or without them being totally different. LOL!!

Great comment, thanks.

I still don’t think I could do it even if one is audio and one is print or e-book.

Too confusing for me.

I’m glad I am not the only one on this one-book team.

Wow, Gabi!! Two to four books at a time. Amazing!!

Interesting about not reading a print…I think that is becoming common.

Thanks for your comment.

Thanks for the tip that they have to be wildly different.

I’m still on the one-book team. LOL!!

Thanks for your comment.

Once I discovered an e-reader (I had an early Sony reader), I was hooked and then came apps making reading even easier. :slightly_smiling_face: The jump to technology was also facilitated by the fact that I was travelling to Asia for weeks at a time and instead of lugging books with me, I could take 30 or 40 on the reader. My move to audiobooks, initially on an iPod, was for a similar reason plus I always loved listening to stories on the radio or books on tape for commuting.

My ebook reader usage goes back even farther than yours, @Gabi_J! My first one was a Rocketbook:

It came out in 1997 and I’m sure I got my first one within a year of that. I LOVED it. I then graduated to a Sony e-reader… it was so pretty and sleek, I lusted after it for probably a year before I talked myself into buying one. And then the Kindle. I’m still not thrilled with my Kindle, but it’s probably the model I have (Paperwhite). I think it’s slow, particularly when looking things up on the Internet.

For audiobooks, the entire reason I got hooked on Audible was because of walking to/from transit, and then walking on my lunch hours. I’ve been a member there since 2003 and have over 800 audiobooks in my library.

For those of you who have Kindles, are other models faster than the Paperwhite?

I also only read one book at a time. I get really involved with the book I am reading, the characters lives etc.

Love it! Those “old” readers were like magic.

It is interesting you say that about Kindle. I have a Paperwhite Signature and while I like it, I don’t love it because it is slow and kind of klunky. I had such high expectations of the tech when I got it and am underwhelmed. I tend to use my iPhone and iPad as much if not more than the Kindle.

While I am trying to get away from purchasing books, my Audible membership is my one splurge. Do you remember books-on-tape? I had a membership and they would send boxes of audiotapes to “rent” and then one would ship back the boxes of completed tapes. A really long book might be 2 to 4 boxes of 10 tapes. At the time I was commuting about 4 hours a day and those boxes were my go-to. Things are really more convenient now.

I am usually reading a book and at the same time (not the actual same time) listening to an audiobook. Occasionally when I need to get a book read by a deadline such as book club meeting or library due date, I may break from a book and read the deadline book, then go back to the original book.

I have a paperwhite also, but like you, I usually read on my phone.

Can you use the Kindle app without purchasing a Kindle? I always wanted to know that.

Oh yes on books on tape!!

Fun answer.

Definitely, and at times, I don’t want to “leave” the characters.

Yes, you can definitely use the kindle app without a kindle. I have it on my iPhone and on a Samsung Galaxy tablet. I rarely use my actual kindle.

Thanks. I shouldn’t have bought a Kindle. LOL!!

Just use the app.
