Do you read in bed? If yes, is it usually a physical book or electronic device (and what kind of device - Kindle, phone, etc.)? If you use a physical book, what do you do about lighting?

Almost half of my reading time is in bed. Oddly enough I can stay awake reading in bed more easily than reading in a chair for some reason. Be it a hardback, paperback or kindle I find the late night early morning hours most productive. I use my phone for audible listening which does tend to make me dose so have experimented with listening while I’m at the computer instead. Although, at the end of some days, there is nothing so nice as being read to sleep! It also depends on the story with the audible - more intriguing ones keep the attention in various places. As to light source, there is a lamp at bedside, and I do have a bed that offers various ā€˜sit-up’ positions which is great for comfortable reading.

I tend to read a lot in bed, too, and I almost always use the Kindle app on my iPhone. Surprisingly, its features are much better than those on my Kindle Paperwhite. I also have an iPad mini I use when my iPhone is out of juice. When I have to read a physical book - happens a couple of times a year - I do use a small reading light rather than a lamp to avoid keeping my spouse awake.

I haven’t tried listening to books in bed because I’m convinced one of two things will happen: Either I’ll fall asleep and have to backtrack, or it’ll wire me and keep me from sleeping.

I do read in bed via my phone. It’s synced to my tablet, which is my go to during the day. Oh, I do read my book via phone when I’m waiting in the grocery checkout line, too, and waiting for my husband to fill the gas tank, etc. Once in awhile I awake and read a bit in the wee hours of the night. The phone light doesn’t disturb my husband. Sometimes the plot is so intense that I just have to read to the point where the pivotal part is resolved. Then it’s lights out!

I like to hold a book. No devices at night.

@Ricki_Aiello, do you use a book light or do you keep on lamp on while you read? I’m curious about which book lights people find work well; I personally can never seem to find one that I like.

This is by far my favorite book light and I’ve tried many of them over the years. This one is light weight, has a very firm and stable clip, holds charge for a super long time, is rechargeable, and inexpensive. The light is adjustable by both color and intensity and the jointed head means the light will fall exactly where you want it.

I don’t like ordering from the ā€œbig river in the skyā€ but theirs is the least expensive. Looks like Walmart has it also.

I start every morning and end every evening in bed with a book. I alternate between reading on my iPhone with the Kindle app or listening to an audiobook on my iPhone. The ā€œsleepā€ or ā€œstop playingā€ feature on an app or the phone is my friend so that the audiobook does not keep playing long after I fall asleep. I tend to use my Kindle more during the day.

Thanks, @Anne_Glasgow! I’m always looking for the perfect book light. I’ll have to give that one a try.

I read every night before calling it a day. It can be both on my kindle or in my hand. I do confess to being somewhat of a night owl, so either works for me. If it is a physical book, I use the lamp at my bedside as I currently do not have a bed partner except for a furry one and light doesn’t seem to bother her.

I read a physical book every night in bed. The only exception is if I’m vacation for an extended period of time and then it’s my kindle.

I love reading in bed both on my iPad and a physical book. I am often too tired at night but morning reading and coffee is a retirement plus

I read anywhere and everywhere, but probably do most in bed each night before going to sleep. Mostly I read print books, but if I’m pressed to get something read, I’ll also download it to my iPad so that if I wake up during the night and can’t go back to sleep I can read without having disturb my husband. I don’t do this often as I know it’s not good for my sleep patterns. The one thing I hate about reading in bed as I’ve gotten older is I invariably nod off, even if the book’s totally engaging.

I read in bed every night on a Kindle. It is my way to relax from a taxing sleep and it puts me to sleep. I put the covers over my head like I did when I was a child so that the light does not bother my husband.

Yes, I read in bed. I always read the hardcopy (physical books). As for lighting, of course, I turn on a light.

My bedtime ritual would not be complete without a pre-sleep read…either kindle or book will satisfy.

Most of my reading is done in bed. Especially the early morning. Coffee pot goes on automatically at 7…grab my cup, head back to bed and read for about an hour. My husband sleeps in. My night time ritual involves some reading also. Only problem it will often put me to sleep. My reading is done mostly on my kindle and once in a while a book. If a book, a bedside light works and does not seem to bother my spouse. I only use audible on car trips, not daily errands. I find it distracting and often have to rewind. On longer trips, I will read and listen to the same book.

I read in bed every night and anytime I wake up and want to go back to sleep. I’ve tried all kinds of lighting but prefer my Kindle.

I too read at night. I started this habit when I first learned to read. It is difficult for me to fall asleep if I don’t read.

I also read every night. I started this habit when many years ago when I first learned to read. I too prefer holding a physical book.. I have a neck light that I originally bought for crocheting. It is now on my nightstand with my book pile. The light is subtle and focused on the page. It does not bother my husband.
